My mother was a very stern parent and happened to hit on the best punishment a child could ever have for a transgression. She made me copy pages from the dictionary in cursive as punishment. I would sit for hours copying every word, every definition, every punctuation mark. It was terrible punishment to endure as the child, but in retrospect one of the best gifts she has ever given me. It vastly expanded my vocabulary beyond that of my peers. It made school easy. It taught me discipline. If you are a parent, give it a try. It will be the Sword of Damocles in your kid's eyes, but why not make them better for having been bad. It is much much worse than a spanking or a switch or grounding or even cutting off internet, yet improves their verbal and mental skills, if begrudgingly.
So, the kids copy off the computer screen? Does Orin Hatch know? Sounds like plagerism. ;-)
LOL... I had a big old thick Websters that I hated with as Ann Coulter says “The passion of 1000 suns”.
Here's a website that offers other parenting advice.
The one about giving kids chores at an early age is a fave.
Are there still schools today that teach cursive? We called it longhand back when I was in grammar school.
my grandparents made their grandchildren get a switch from the tree if one wasn’t available. The switch was always visible at their house and at my aunt’s houses.
you got it easy with copying from a dictinary!
Don’t think I got off easy friend. Hours of copying vs. a switch.... any rational kid would pick the switch.
Cool idea. Too bad you were not around to advise me of that about 25 years ago.
I loved to read and I had a dictionary in the bathroom
I don’t think that most schools still teach cursive.
Now you have given me a better idea. Make them text the dictionary pages to their friends. Win win for everyone. Their idiot friends get a bit of education too.
;-)
I also loved to read, but hated the damned dictionary. It was an ominous book to me. A terrible tome.
I remember my mom having me read on a high-chair while she washed the dishes.
It wasn’t until 20 years later I discovered that it was when I was 4yo and all of us had to take our turn in the barrel from 4 to 8 yo.
I remember it being a long time but I guess it was maybe 4 or 5 minutes.
I owe EVERYTHING to my Mom. I will write a book about her someday. She raised 7 overly-ambitious kids all but on her own (not a Single Mom by today’s definition — but she chose Dad poorly but I know why and had to leave him and know that, too).
My Mom passed in her 60’s from too damn much life put on her shoulders. And I was originally a huge weight but in the latter years I like to think I was removed what burdens I could.
I miss her so.
Been there, done that. I coulda been a typesetter, but lucked out.....
>>I loved to read and I had a dictionary in the bathroom <<
I also loved to read but had Asimov and Heinlein in the bathroom.
Computer Dictionaries are a time saver and way more welcoming. Typing first drafts as finals drafts too.....too.
“Are there still schools today that teach cursive? We called it longhand back when I was in grammar school”.
I think it’s being phased out. Sad.
I can’t remember in which grade it was but we learned calligraphy and it was a lot of fun.
In those days the teacher could use a yard stick or ruler on us if called for.
I agree, but that terrible tome for a kid... ;-(
he he
What a great idea. Each word was a new idea all by itself.
You must know something about everything!
When was your first tower shooting?
My folks took it seriously and the next year I received an A or B.
I'm not sure what happened but to this day I'm hate chiauauas, snakes and spiders.
