On June 23, 2014 35 members of Congress sent a letter to DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson, urging him to release lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) illegals. Due to significantly higher sexual assault rates among this population in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, ICE established a working group to develop recommendations to address this very real and serious issue. However, Congress is pressuring DHS to release these individuals before the working groups recommendations have been reviewed. The members stated in their letter that,
detention should almost never be used for vulnerable groups such as LGBT immigrants. It is unclear why Congress failed to mention other vulnerable segments of the illegal alien community such as handicapped or unaccompanied minors; surely they too could make a case for their vulnerability.
