Place your bets: I got a sixer that says Donald Trump doesn't make it to the end of the year
The Star Ledger ^ | July 11, 2015 | Paul Mulshine

As I have noted, I never bet more than a six-pack on politics. That keeps it at a level that is fun but not serious.

In that regard, I made a bet last spring with state Senator Mike Doherty over whether Chris Christie would formally enter the race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.

I said yes. Mike said no.

Frankly I was a bit surprised. Mike is a conservative Republican from Warren County who has been quite outspoken in his assessment of Christie's overbearing ego and ambition. I thought he of all people would predict that Christie would make a bid for the most important job on the planet.

But as you can see from the photo above, he took the wrong side of that bet. When Mike and his wife Linda visited Spring Lake last week I met him to collect my six-pack of Dogfish Head 60-Minute IPA.

It's quite delicious. I'm looking forward to winning more such bets.

In that spirit, I'm inviting readers to comment on how they would handicap a couple of candidacies. One is Christie's, of course. And the other is Donald Trump's run for the Republican nomination.

Here's how I would bet. When it comes to Trump, I'd invest 72 ounces of suds in the notion that he's not in it for the long haul.

My guess is that he's going to have his fun for a bit longer, perhaps through the August Fox News debate, and then think better of the notion.

At the moment he's riding high in the polls, but that doesn't mean much. Around this time in the last cycle Herman Cain was doing great in the polls. But those early polls are meaningless. To get actual voters to the actual polls requires a big organization....

funny how this man is being attacked and his views are considered - angry, racist, or hateful. If we let these lives shit trump up for views we all share, what do u think they would do to us common folk? Circle the wagons folks.... Free speech and this country are in jeopardy. And the repub nominees are attacking trump more than the dems.... Let’s not forget show our GOPe stood by Palin...oh that’s right, they didn’t. Wake up!!!!!!

Christie doesn’t have a chance. For Trump to stay in, he would have to turn his business empire over to others. I’d hope he toys around for quite awhile, then bows out and endorses Cruz.

Try this brand if you ever get a chance. I worked security for them a few years back at an arts festival and got to taste all their varieties.

Get him into a debate and he will make Governor Mumbles Rick Perry look like a seasoned veteran

I'd say his performance in a live debate would be closer to Joan Rivers than to Rick Perry.

He will eat them alive, and have the audience hooting and laughing.

Trump is equally functional doing exactly what he is doing versus what everyone else thinks he should do versus dropping out. I could not care less what people say about him. His function, if it is indeed to collect anger, is working very well and I for one am glad he is in the race or pretending to be in the race.

Not everyone wants it to be a night at the Improv. Some are looking forward to hearing the candidates speak on the issues. That's when political infant and lifelong liberal Donald Trump's rhetoric will fail him and he will die on the vine.

Why doesn’t he do a real bet and give us some odds if he is so sure?

Pray America is waking

How the H did you know I like Pinot Noir? Also Pinot Grigio, but my favorites still reside in France. I WILL try Redwood Creek and thanks for the advice.

Just on the QT... if you got to try all their varieties, how straight were you walking after the festival? (Grin)

I'm not taking that bet as it's entirely possible that sometime before December, Trump calls a press conference to drop from the race, "declare victory" and throw his support behind another candidate.

How could Trump declare victory in such a circumstance? He could state - with some credibility - that his entry into the race forced the other candidates to confront the real issues and now that he's achieved that objective, he is going to step aside and endorse somebody who he feels has the best chance to beat Hillary the next year and effect the changes that our country needs. Could be Cruz but don't be surprised if it's Carly Fiorina, who is a successful outside-the-beltway business person like himself.

That said, if Trump is still in the race after December, you might as well start calling him President Trump because if he survives the firestorm that is going to come his way over the next six months, then there is pretty much nobody that is going to beat him in the coming primaries and caucuses and then in the general election.

The country needs a leader who is not just another career politician and if Trump can survive the viciousness that the media is going to throw his way, the people are going to vote him in.

He has not closed the door on running 3rd Party. If he does it’s proof he cares more about his ego than the country OR he wants to ensure election of Hillary.

I’m a big boy and it was over the period of several day. Then, since they were all flying back to NYC from Fort Worth, they gave me all the unopened cases.

I have one concern. With 10 candidates will they have time to speak? It’s going to be a crowded stage.

Don't be so sure of that. The boardrooms of the corporate world will eat you alive if you don't have a killer instinct and can think quick on your feet.

I'm sure Trump has had his share of boardroom scuffles and it's clear to see he comes out on top more often than not.

He may just mop the floor with most of these guys.

"He may be comfortable in front of the cameras, but the man is a political infant."

Skip past elections and assume he gets elected...
Look at Obama. I say this with a straight face: Obama is as qualified to be president as I am... that's not saying much. That being said, look at the lunacy he has managed to write into law and the socialist accomplishments he has been able to achieve. Granted, all of it, including foreign policy is a complete disaster, but he got just about everything he wanted outside of gun bans. It's not necessarily how qualified you are, it's about the dastardly SOB's you surround yourself with once you get there.
