I have to assume that my SSAN and other data was hacked. So, what do I do??

Right now? Put a lock on your credit (or a freeze, may cost up to $10 depending on the company - Experian, TransUnion, Equifax - do all three, just one won't cover it). If you need credit, they give you a pin to unfreeze it temporarily, then freeze it again - usually with no, or a smaller, fee. Monitor the hell out of your current accounts - try getting new cards/card numbers issued. Prevention is better than detection, Lifelock is detection, credit freeze is prevention.

You may yet receive a letter from OPM.

Name and SSN, line after line, thousands of them.

I still had copies (I've shredded them since) of orders that were bulk transfers from Basic to Training schools. Or bulk orders for TDY. Everyone's name and SSN was on them. This was as recent as 1994. Hell, my honorable discharge notice (framed for hanging) has my SSN on it. It wasn't a big deal then, because it wasn't supposed to be used for identification, unfortunately, it's all there is. Hell, Idaho had it on it's drivers licenses and my bank put it right on my checks, with my full name and address.

I almost always tell the requester "no," and invite them to make up a number of their choosing. This works about 99% of the time, opening bank accounts being one exception, and any interaction with a government entity being the other.

Law school administration got a little pissy about it, but eventually gave me their made up number for student ID. They couldn't show me where, in the law, they were entitled to my SSN. It's only purpose was student ID number.

The other guys do it for credit check. Give them a CC number, they can run that.

Sometimes you will have to take your business elsewhere, and saying "no" always increases the time it takes to do business. But that's the price you pay to limit the circulation of your SSN.

Just a quick FYI, it’s actually a SSAN. Social Security Account Number. I just ask them if they are going to make a deposit into my account. LOL It’s the same as a Bank Account Number.

Both my husband & I were federal employees...DOD civilians in Germany. Wondering when we’re going to get the notice that our data was in that compromised batch.

As I understand it, they’ll offer you some third-rate, commodity-quality identity theft service for a year free.

My post was NOT meant for those of you who are vets or those of you who ACTUALLY do a good job.

I think you all know who I am referring to when I said parasites. Those who do nothing but sit on their asses and do little but take a paycheck and suck from the govt tit. Those are the ones I am talking about.

I sincerely apologize to my fellow Freepers and in no way was referring to ANY of you.

I’ll bet this data is not going to the Chinese or Cubans. My guess is that its going into an elections database domestically.

Funny how some will berate and badmouth others and show how ignorant they are. You probably don’t amount to a flea on the ass of many of those you denigrate - many risked their lives and some are family members of those who died so idiots like you can spew.

OPM/The Feds gave “root access” (Admin level access) to contractors in China & Argentina (lowest bidder?, shouldn’t the lowest bidder be required to be in the U.S at the very least?). —> “Contractors in Argentina and China were given “direct access to every row of data in every database” when they were hired by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to manage the personnel records of more than 14 million federal employees, a federal consultant told ArsTechnica.”

I wonder how many of Princess Barry’s SSNs were obtained by the Chinese?

Of course, she’s never undergone a security clearance background check, so that shouldn’t be a concern.
