After a series of cyber failures involving first UAL, then this website, then the NYSE which is still halted, then the WSJ, some have suggested that this could be a concerted cyber attack (perhaps by retaliatory China unhappy its stocks are plunging) focusing on the US. So we decided to look at a real-time cyber attack map courtesy of Norsecorp which provides real time visibility into global cyber attacks.
What clearly stands out is that for some reason Chinese DDOS attacks/hackers seem to be focusing on St. Louis this morning.
Whether this is related to the series of suspicious cyber failures today, is so far unclear, although if there is a connection at least there is a way to keep track of the first global cyberwar in real-time.
Info ping.
Yes, all that this morning in the computer world was cyber attacks..
Not surprised. China’s economy is in “meltdown” mode or the starts of it.
I was slightly amused at work today when I read the headline.
Looks like China is going through what could be close to a “1929.”
Why zero hedge? It can’t be that important.
We monitor that on a daily basis. It always looks like that. Their are many attacks aimed at the US from China, Russia and Europe daily.
And no I don’t work for the Feral Gubermint.
:)
The eastern seaboard net backbone was slower than usual, the net game World of Tanks was unplayable.
Ping rate higher than 900ms.
And seeing the stock exchange, United airlines, and other sites get pummeled just smacked of net attack to me.
China then announced their block to major stockholders on selling.

Yeah, they’re in freefall.
Read the comments on this article. One poster explained very well why one area (in particular) seems to be hit more than anyone.
To paraphrase:
Too many people in China use bootleg copies of Windows. This leaves them open to bots. Once their computers are infected, the hacker can use that computer to ‘attack’ a specific target.
That’s why the attack on St. Louis (?) today is spreading. Now the hits are coming from multiple nations (even within the US)
So some hacker (could be from anywhere) is attacking one particular target and using ‘slaves’ to do the lock-picking.
Not saying that China’s NOT a big problem when it comes to cyber attacks (they sure are), but they can also be useful idiots.
Hmmm...I would think they are pegging Boeing.
Looks like port scans from one IP to another using a map display. I presume that this Norse outfit has some kind of “device” installed at their customers location that is tracking the traffic for those clients. Unless I am missing something I don’t see the big deal.
The St. Louis part of this puzzle may have been explained on this earlier thread.

Our internet this morning was incredibly slow.
There are just a few companies in this world who carry the multiple petabytes of internet data every day. They can see this sort of thing happening and stop if for their clients.
They CAN. Sometimes NOT stopping it but analyzing it is more useful.
Thanks Darksheare.
Why St. Louis? Any guesses?
I still don’t see why St. Louis is the target...
There are several targets of interest in St.Louis, but if I was a Chinese hacker, it would be the St. Louis Federal reserve.
