I am a 60-something Caucasian Yankee, born and raised in Michigan. My mother was British. My father was the first in his Canadian-immigrant family born in the USA. I have lived in North Carolina for almost 40 years, longer than my next door neighbors who were born and raised here. I understand a lot about the South, except for one thing: The pride in the Confederacy, its history and symbols. I do understand the reverence for General Robert E. Lee. I share it. He was a great general and a good and great man. He could have fought on but surrendered ultimately for the good of the whole country.
A few years ago, there was a movement in our town to retire the giant statue of the Confederate soldier that towers over the one-story public library. Black citizens came to city meetings and pleaded their case. The statue made them feel terrible. They did not want their children to have to walk past it as they entered and left the public library. They begged the powers-that-be to please at least move it, if not destroy it altogether.

It isn’t so much “Confederate Pride” as it is a deep down distrust and disdain for arrogant Yankees who cluster like rats in large cities and congratulate themselves that they are so far more civilized than those ignorant disgusting rednecks from the south.
Ditto!
So you can't imagine how a Confederate flag supporter feels but you can imagine how a black person feels? Really?
I don't understand why a person can be so supportive of the Confederacy either. But unlike this author I don't try to. There are a lot of things about me that a Confederate flag supporter probably wouldn't understand either, and since they have the courtesy to not pass judgement on those then the least I can do is keep my mouth shut about their attachment to their cause.
Ditto to your Ditto.
Typical liberal arrogance.
There’s also the wisdom of remembering history and taking lesson.
Amen!
The premise the defying FedGov is a concept totally alien to some people. The republic is dead in them.
Preach it!
It’s not about understanding, it’s about tolerance. If supporters of the Confederate flag are required to tolerate all liberal notions, why can they not be asked the same?
Answer: hypocrites
Take Comedians doing a show in NYC. The favorite guaranteed go-to joke is the typical ignorant, racist, hick redneck. They all laugh and approve - applaud. The truth is that most of them are arrogant, self-absorbed self-pleasing dilettantes that have to work 2 jobs and live in a sh!thole apartment so they can go out and indulge themselves with like minded bigots.
The statue made them feel terrible. They did not want their children to have to walk past it as they entered and left the public library. They begged the powers-that-be to please at least move it, if not destroy it altogether.
Like the Taliban blowing up centuries old Buddah statues because they offend them.
Or, ISIS destroying history.
is the southern (and later) version of this:
Guess who's next on the list?
Ditto! From an Unreconstructed Southerner!
Because this is our land and you’re on it. Yankee trash.
In the minds of the Left, Confederate = white, Yankee = black or non-racist white. They hate white people, they hate this country. They will attack everything that is meaningful to whites other than them. They control most institutions in this country, legal and illegal.
Yes, no difference, and both based on religious beliefs; the false religions of islam and of the church of liberalism.
Step 1: Don’t fall into the trap and accept as fact that the secession movement was only about slavery
Step 2: You’re done
