Laptop. I have a Mac and love it, but others love their Windows 8.1 or 7. NOT Windows 8. I hope you found the advice you really need. :)

Of course, I meant to ping onyx to this. LOL! Ok, having a good laptop does not guarantee user expertise! :)

Don’t ask me. I do guns, salsa, and various whiskeys.

ZDNET reporter James Kendrick writes today that he has ditched his MacBook office computer for an Acer Chromebook 13, which had impressed him when he reviewed it a while back. Battery life 11 hours.

He reports its price as $300. I see Walmart has them for around that price.

Walmart also has an ASUS 15.6" laptop for $229 and an HP 19.45" all-in-one desktop for $329. These come with Windows 8.1 installed (not my preference — if I were buying one, I'd first check around to see if it's reported to run Linux well).

That sucks. I have a pretty good one I think, with an uninterruptible power supply that keeps your PC powered up a few minutes so you can finish what you are doing and do a controlled shut down.

I hope you get a good surge protector this time.

It's worth having your old machine checked to make sure it's completely fried.

E.g., it's possible that only the power supply is blown. If so, it can be replaced fairly easily, and everything will be back in order.

It's also possible that your old disk drive survived. If so, you can attach it to a new computer and recover all your old files off of it.

If the drive is actually fried, and there were important files on it, there are outfits that specialize in disk recovery. They'll take it apart in a clean room, replace its blown electronics, and then get the files off of it. But they cost $$, so only if you lost important stuff.

A friend loaned me her laptop while I gathered the money for a new computer after mine bit the dust.
.. it was like looking at a monitor through a backwards telescope while working the keyboard with a pool cue IMO.

But obviously, opinions differ.

Indeed. I was always intimidated and terrified by all the many components of the PCs...and when I had my first access to a little Dell laptop at work, I was hooked and the rest is, like they say, history. LOL!

“A laptop is a compromise...”

BS...I retired desktops years ago and do everything with laptops. There is no reason for a desktop if you are not a supercilious gamer, or think your desktop is gonna be a server (which it won’t be).

And there are times when any of us ‘need’ a laptop. I need one when I want to go to another part of the house and use it. I need one when I travel.

And btw, there is no excuse for ‘loosing all my data’...it is called backup! Backup can easily be done to an external hard drive...they are not expensive. Backup can also be done via ‘cloud’ and this is available various ways...Norton, a very good security system, has it available.

Just as you said, you don’t want a desktop unless you want a better computer for instance to play games, and if you don’t need a laptop, because you don’t want to take the computer around with you.

If one doesn’t need to move their computer around, the the desktop is superior, more computer for your money, no problems with overheating, no money wasted on a battery pack that you won’t use, and will go bad in time, whether you use it or not.

With a desk top, it is easy to replace and update components, and it should last much longer than the laptops, which are basically disposables.

Why would someone who uses only a desktop computer, want to use a laptop for that same purpose, since a laptop is a compromise?

“since a laptop is a compromise...”

First, for me a laptop is not a compromise. I am computer literate, though not a ‘guru’. I use my computer(s) for many different things every day. I work from home. I travel on occasion. I back up my data. Desktop or laptop requires that if one cares about ones data or anything else on ones computer.

I use protection. Virus attacks are real. I like Norton 360. I have used others. Norton serves me well, and better than others I have tried. Sometimes we can do foolish things and ignore warnings...did that once and got a Trojan. Got rid of it with Norton Power Eraser (free to anyone). Protection is a must. If you use Linux or a Mac and do not use protection you are a fool.

All that said, all of this is subjective comment, and to each his own. Though I am not a power user, I use a lot more of what is available in my computer than most everyday computer users would use.

Right now I have 3 laptops operating. One is an older Dell that is still running on XP. Play with it occasionally, but it is not a necessary part of my life. I have two Lenovo’s. One is a recent machine that is more than capable. The other Lenovo has a smaller screen and it my travel backup if I fly - not loaded with all my personal stuff, but gives me what I need when traveling. If TSA wants to ‘fart’ with it, they won’t learn much.

That is the way it works, people who want a laptop, buy one.

Just now reading this informative thread on laptop vs desk computers. We put off laptops till the price became affordable for us. Now husband and I each have one plus a fairly new desktop. Seldom use the desktop because the laptops are so convenient and portable. Deck, camper etc. We do not need anything sophisticated so this arrangement suits everything we need. If it can be arranged, both desk top and a laptop are good to have. More practical to use the desk top for printing altho such can be arranged for laptops. Our computers have all been free of mechanical problems for at least the three to five years we have had them. The laptops are in constant use on a daily basis. Use them for checking emails, travel arrangements, etc. We always take at least one along when traveling as they are useful for emailing, keeping up in general and just checking out whatever.

I bought an HP 17.3 inch refurbished laptop from Walmart and love it! I am very picky. I had to have the 17.3 and a 10-key. I did get the extended warranty just in case. It was not very much for that. I use mine every single day for hours and have had it for a year and a half. I think it cost me about $350.
I refuse to buy Dell or Apple, but that is just me. lol
I thought I wanted a mouse but have found I really prefer the touchpad.

Hi dearest onyx. I was looking at the ads in the local Sunday paper, and I remembered that you said you have an Office Depot there. IF your old computer is completely and totally fried and nothing is salvageable, they have a desktop that might fit your needs. It is a Dell, with 4GB of memory and a 500GB hard drive, and is on sale for $219.99.

I'm crossing my fingers (and praying) for you sweetie.

Laptops do not need to be installed.

A USB mouse is normally very very cheap (mine was less than $3)
