One answer: lead poisoning. Yes, seriously. It produces social dysfunction, except the kind among members of Congress who won’t fight it.
Whenever something like the death of Freddie Gray happens, we usually get around, by the third or fourth day, to the broader poverty discussion. This debate usually boils down to the Great Society programs. Liberals say they worked, and what we need are more of them. Conservatives say they failed and the real answer is to found in a sterner moral code.
Between the two, I unsurprisingly endorse the liberal view above (although I don’t think the conservatives have been 100 percent wrong, more on which later). But there’s a more constructive way to talk about poverty than to fight over 50-year-old programs; it’s to use a tragedy like this not just to defend old policies but to promote new ways of understanding poverty and the anti-social behavior that helps keep so many people trapped in it. And Gray’s sad case is a prime example....

I think in freddies case...it may have been MERCURY poisoning that set em off.....
Soooo, it was lead paint that lead Freddie to a life of crime. It wasn’t his heroin addict mother, absent if not unknown father, or his decisions to deal drugs. Okey dokey.

Democrats had total control of the government from 2009 through 2012. And all of a sudden, Baltimore’s lead problem is something Congress won’t address because Republicans control it.
I grew up in a house with lead paint on the walls (and a lot of it flaking off the wall!) and I don’t remember ever, ever eating paint. I have a master’s degree and I don’t *think* I’m cognitively impaired! ;o) Honestly, why is lead paint such a big deal? Lead *pipes* were part of the downfall of ancient Rome, but that’s different. How many kids sit around and snack on paint chips? (OTOH I never ate Playdoh or glue, either. Maybe some kids just feast on everything?)

No I think she is, I heard that he’d won some lawsuit based on having lead based paint in his home when he was a child. but I’m too lazy to read the article.
Lead? Seriously? And here I am thinking it was failed Democratic leftist policies that have made America’s inner cities economic dead zones, and hampered Freddie Gray’s chance for success in life.

Considering the neighborhood he lived in, he probably would have eventually died of lead poisoning anyway. Bang, bang ...
I blame it on skin color and global warming....heat fries the brain.... and black attracts heat...much more plausible reasoning then lead paint!!...It explains why blacks do more crimes..are in jail above their %...it explains everything!!!...Think about it...Name a northern country that is inhabited by blacks????...( I could go on and on but u get the point!)
Socialism killed the inner cities, lead paint has been cleaned up in free american cities run by conservative politics. No one can afford to remodel with the fat cat tax collectors at their throats funding the democrat social gravy train.
Oh, please. They’ve been harping on this lead bullshit since the late 70s that I can remember.
The author steps over from the plausible into the risible when he implies that this is a broad explanation for the lawlessness, violence, and utterly destructive culture that pervades these areas. We have mothers with drug issues, sons with drug issues, and a strange and malevolent counterculture that elevates theft, rape, and assault into high-status activities. Lead paint didn't cause those.
