"The greatest motivator in the world is your (fanny) on the bench." - Bob Knight
While it may be hard for a parent to hear, maybe the coach doesn't like your son or daughter. Let me repeat: Maybe the coach doesn't like your son or daughter.
What? Everyone likes MY daughter.
Maybe, just maybe, the coach doesn't even like you. What? Everyone likes...ME!
Yes, it's true. Coaches don't always have great fondness for all of their players, nor the parents of all their players.

That summer, I practiced two hours a day, every day. I couldn't believe how good I got, and how fast it happened. In the fall of sophomore year, I got in to jazz band, and junior and senior year played first chair... then made all-county and all-state, twice.
Not only did I find out how much I could accomplish by practicing, I began to figure out how to practice.
A few years later, I figured out that you can practice anything and get better at it than you ever thought you could be.
All because I failed to get into jazz band as a freshman in high school. It was the first thing I ever auditioned for and didn't get into.
One of the most important things I ever learned. One of the most important things that ever happened in my life.
My son played football until the end of his junior year. For 4 years, he played every down. Sometimes he did JV and Varsity. He finally was injured his junior year and was able to “make the bench”. He gave it up for his senior year and focused on track. He was just burnt out.
Tom, I have the same opinion, also learned from music...practice will accomplish almost everything.
When I hear someone say, “I would give anything to be able to play like that!” I say, “then why did you not put in the years of practice and study it takes?”.
I play softball four mornings a week at a local park with a large bunch of retirees beginning now and way into the fall. We have NEVER witnessed a group of kids at the park playing pick-up ball amongst themselves, they're all herded onto their respective little league teams.
We frequently talk about this phenomenon amongst ourselves. When we were kids, we left the house in the morning and headed to the nearest baseball diamond where we would play all day until we had to be home for supper......
Good for you!! I had one or two good seasons in baseball. I rode the bench alot of the other years. Had a condition called lazy muscle syndrome. Would kind of come and go and when it came legs would just get SO weak. But the two good years were lots of fun!!!
Later on I got Fast and did the mile in close to 5. Really built upper body and could bench 350.
Now that’s my weight lol I’m doomed
Funny how many people miss that lesson. My dad was my coach and I worked my butt off. I have a few memories of almost passing out from running so hard.
Track is a pretty cut and dry sport-you beat team mates and you are on the relay. I once ran off to make a relay that I didn’t normally run (4x400) and made the team. Had the 5th place girl (a friend of mine) crying in the locker room and saying, “Just because your dad is the coach and you beat me...you got on the team.” Most of my teammates agreed with her. Good grief.
There are players I couldn’t stand. But then again, it was usually because of their parents. I never benched players because I didn’t like them. Why destroy my team and the team’s morale.
If I didn’t like a player, I cut them. Why waste a roster spot? Biggest issue I had was a kid played high school hockey then wanted to play for me. My first question was, “if you had two games on the same day and had to choose, who would you play for?” Kid would come back and tell me his school coach asked him the same question. “And what did you say?” He said he would play for the school. CUT!
Parent would ask me why I cut their kid. I tell them because he would rather play for his school than for me. And by the way, it’s a good choice. I want the kid playing for his school.
Only time my players ever rode the bench was if they didn’t do what I asked of them or if they had too many penalties and the next penalty was a suspension. After that game, we went back to zero.
My own opinion, if a coach makes a player ride the bench because he doesn’t like the player, then that coach should be fired.
The War on Drugs proved the cure worse than the disease.
In similar fashion, humblegunner has accomplished the improbable...making blogpimps less irritating than self appointed blogcops.
I had a similar experience. I rode the pine for several years, had two good years when I was 11 and 12 years old (after a coach worked one on one with me on my hitting), then pretty much stunk for the remainder of my baseball career. I don’t have a medical excuse, however. Where I played, the 13-17 year olds were all grouped together in one league. As a 13 year old, I got beaned in the head by a 17 year old throwing about 200 miles per hour and was never able to hang in the box afterward (Obviously I exaggerate about how hard he threw, but it seemed that bad to my freshly beaned 13 year old self :) )
Bless your little heart.
That’s so nice of you to say.
that could put the fear of God in you and change your playing abilities for good. I bet it happens to prow too.
Happened to me but not that hard but still moved back an swung blindly for about a year
I’ll stop. I didn’t realize posting was a problem. I’ve been posting on Freerepublic for nearly a decade. My apologies.
I agree entirely. The pick-up-games and even just kick-the-can in the neighborhood is all but lost. It’s sad. So is the number of people that are missing church and other family activities to travel all over the place. For what reason? I’m not sure.
Why not just post the full content here?
I can do that. I honestly wasn’t trying to break the rules. Are there rules posted somewhere to be certain that if I do post that I’m doing it correctly?
One time.....at band camp..............
Here’s the owner’s take on the issue:

Kids playing youth sports shouldn’t just ride the pine, this is RECREATIONAL Sports. They should all get playing time the point is to play and learn to compete.
They should of course be doing their best while in the game. They kids practice and should get the chance to play.
My child was a kid who started 4 years in college. Youth sports. She worked a lot harder than the kids playing rec, and had the talent also, but kids shouldn’t be riding the pine when they are putting n the time on a rec team.
