I am white and I do the same thing. I am always polite, ask permission to get registration from glove box, and tell officer where my firearm is located. Hands on steering wheel.

The other acceptable position, even better, is left hand on the outside mirror, right hand on the top of the left wrist, holding it. Grabbing your watch, as it were, if you are wearing one.

I’ve never liked that fact that cops have authority of any kind over me, but, I always considered it good citizenship to be respectful and not make their jobs harder.
As an elderly white woman, I also keep my hands on the wheel during a traffic stop. If you make life easier for others, it makes you feel good.
