K. Gross made these images to show the inner construction of the M855 and SS109 projectiles, or bullets. You can see the steel tip in front of the lead core. The mostly copper jacket is the layer around the outside in the images.
I do not have contact information for Mr. Gross; I will gladly take down the picture or provide a link as he may desire. I believe that he would like these images made available to inform the public.
Here is the definition of "armor piercing ammunition" from the applicable federal code:
(B) The term armor piercing ammunition means
The SS109 and M855 projectiles do not seem to fit, as their cores are mostly lead. But clear reading of definitions does not a legal scholar make; we all know how muddied "shall not be infringed" has been. I think more and better information helps people to understand the arguments.
I agree but maybe you should have worded it different.
Isn’t emotional thinkers an oxymoron?
Laws passed on emotion usually range from bad to God awful.
Sad part is these laws seem to remain on the books for two or three generations until cooler heads either repeal them or a newer Supreme Court rules them unconstitutional.
Obozo gave some idiotic speech a few days ago and talked about these cartridges and their handguns that could be easily concealable.
For the past few decades Democrats/Communists have been allowed to lie with impunity.
7.62x39 steel core has been banned from import for several years now, and just last fall the ATF banned 5.45x39 steel core 7N6, because of AK style pistols like that. M855 Green Tip is late to the party.
Nope. That's not a stock. That's a "stabilizer". It's designed (wink, wink) to stabilize the "pistol" so you can accurately fire it one handed. If it was designed to fire two handed it would be illegal. No kidding. They come with a letter from the BATF (or whatever they call it these days) stating that they are legal.
See #11. Mea culpa.
Well, anybody that would try to conceal something like either an AR-15 or AK-47 type handgun would have to be a complete idiot anyway. This is all just BS camel nose under the tent stuff to do backdoor gun control. Even the (honest) cops know that they aren’t in any danger from this stuff.
Of course.
That's not a stock, that's a Sig arm brace. There was yet another stink with the ATF last January when they decided that the Sig Arm Brace was legal to attach to a pistol, but if you tried to shoulder it you were "remanufacturing" the brace and creating an SBR.
"Proper" use of the Sig brace:
You hit the nail right on the head. The fact remains that any .223/5.56 ammunition fired from an AR pistol will penetrate Level IIIA soft body armor worn by police under their uniforms. Banning M855 does not increase police safety in the least.
So, if it is put to the shoulder, its illegal? Hadnt seen one of those before. This is like the silliness of using a bayonnet lug, or a pistol grip, or a barrel shroud etc. to turn a sport utility rifle into an “assault rifle.”
That’s kind of a tricky question. Google “Stabilizing brace for AR-15 style pistols” and you’ll get different opinions on that.
No - the 1968 GCA was drafted and supported by SAAMI to protect the firearms industry from surplus WWII military firearms.
Send me your e-mail address by private mail and I will provide documented and verifiable evidence.
Excerpt:
The pistol stabilizing brace was neither designed nor approved to be used as a shoulder stock, and therefore use as a shoulder stock constitutes a redesign of the device because a possessor has changed the very function of the item. Any individual letters stating otherwise are contrary to the plain language of the NFA, misapply Federal law, and are hereby revoked.
Any person who intends to use a handgun stabilizing brace as a shoulder stock on a pistol (having a rifled barrel under 16 inches in length or a smooth bore firearm with a barrel under 18 inches in length) must first file an ATF Form 1 and pay the applicable tax because the resulting firearm will be subject to all provisions of the NFA.
And, coming next is illegal firing of the firearm while holding it with both hands.
About as arbitrary as when you are allowed to have a forearm on your “pistol” but cannot have a vertical grip on the forearm.
Overall appearance and visible features of firearms, in addition to the simple fact that they are firearms, offend the “sensibilities” of almost, but not quite all liberals.
Then comes the writing of ridiculous, often vague, contradictory, pointless and confusing regulations such as the ATF letter. If common use of an accessory is not illegal, then a way to make use of it illegal and regulated are created.
But, solutions like the (wink, wink) wrist brace and thumbhole stocks are found by the marketplace. It just becomes a chess game sometimes.
Here I thought Armour was
found on a TANK .
