The K9 will probably have to be put down. Can't be on the police force or even be sent home retired with another handler due to liability issues.

The father should be terminated from the force. Don't know what happened but this is crazy. Fire him and let him live with this for the rest of his life, and he will be reminded everyday when he looks at his son.

It is not necessarily the dog’s fault. These dogs (depending on what it was trained to do) have to be handled like loaded guns, and leaving one in the yard, unsupervised with a child is just nuts. The handler needs to be fired and prosecuted for reckless child endangerment.
Unfortunately, I have known too many cop dog handlers that have absolutely no understanding of what they are doing.
Unfortunately, you are probably right about the dog.

You should read some of the posts at the original story site. Stupid people trying to make the dog the victim. That sweet little doggie chewed the poor kid’s foot off. It MUST be put down.
What is wrong with people? Apparently they think animals are more important than children. Could they be liberals?

The police dog in my town goes home with the handler, but is not considered part of the family and is kept separate from the family.

The dog should have never been in the situation. Attack-trained dogs are not supposed to be treated like “loving pets”.

They call this dog a German Shepherd once, but I am not totally sure by the iffy pix. Seems to have pretty much a GS head, but body looks suspect.

Law enforcement service dogs while useful in law enforcement to a degree are becoming more of a liability. What law enforcement in general has become is disgraceful and frankly unacceptable now.
There needs to be very strict and harsh penalties for when cops do stupid stuff or are negligent with the tools of their job that result in injury or death. That dog is a liability, the handler is a liability and nothing will happen. Sad.
