Lavrov: US escalated Ukraine crisis at every stage & blamed Russia

At every stage of the Ukrainian crisis Washington has been taking steps that “only promoted further aggravation of the situation,” Russian FM Sergey Lavrov said at the Munich Security Conference.

The West connives to justify Kiev’s military operation in eastern Ukraine, which involves the use of internationally prohibited munitions, such as cluster weapons, the head of the Russian delegation in Munich pointed out.

“We cannot understand why in Afghanistan, Yemen and Mali the West is calling on the governments to hold talks with the opposition, in some cases even with extremists, whereas in regard to the Ukrainian crisis, the West is indulging Kiev in its military operation,” Lavrov said.

However, there is every chance the peace talks in Moscow could unravel the conflict in Ukraine, he added, saying that Russia will persist in pursuing the peace process.

“Russia is set to promote the peace process in Ukraine. We consistently stand against further warring, we advocate withdrawal of heavy weapons and initiating direct talks between Kiev and the militia in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions,” Russia’s Foreign Minister stressed.

Split or solidarity? Crisis in E. Ukraine tops Munich Security Conference agenda

The spiralling conflict in eastern Ukraine is in the spotlight at the Munich Security Conference with a rift opening between the US and Europe. Washington is considering supplying lethal weapons to Ukraine, while European nations are opposing the move.

Among the most anticipated speakers on Saturday, considered the most crucial day in the conference, are Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US Vice President Joe Biden.

The event comes in the wake of the much anticipated and secretive talks between the leaders of France, Germany and Russia, which were held behind closed doors in the Kremlin late on Friday.

The German chancellor and the French president went to Kiev and Moscow to work out a solution to the conflict in the Normandy Four format (Russia, Germany, Ukraine and France), which would satisfy both Kiev and the eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

‘US imperial overstretch: Washington reckless in calls to arm Kiev, should put Russia into context’

Washington should stop making dangerous moves, like arming Kiev with US weapons, and must put the Ukrainian conflict into a wider context of crises, cooperating with Russia to solve them, Martin Sieff, columnist for the Post-Examiner newspaper, told RT.

RT: The Moscow talks on Ukraine between the leaders of Russia, Germany and France are said to have been constructive and positive, although no details have been released yet. What do you thing we will be hearing?

Martin Sieff: I think we will be seeing an outlined document, I think there will be significant progress made towards the implementation of a ceasefire. [German] Chancellor [Angela] Merkel and [French] President [Francois] Hollande belatedly recognized the seriousness of what is happening in Ukraine, they do want to move back from the brink, they do want to restrain the Kiev government, they are strongly in favor on a negotiated settlement. The problems will be in Washington and Kiev, not in Paris and Berlin.

RT: We are told that we should be expecting a call on Sunday that will be held between Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France. Do you think they will be able to come forward with some sort of an agreement so that there could be joint progress?

MS: There is a possibility of it, but we will have to be cautious until we hear what comes out of the Sunday phone negotiations. The key rogue player here is Kiev. The West created [Ukrainian] President [Petro] Poroshenko, but he is in many respects the tail that wags the dog, they cannot always rein him in. He is the rogue player, he is the joker in this hand.

They are the ones who invaded Ukraine. The US hasn’t done it. They sure like to cast blame while they destroy a sovereign nation.

It’s a myth, the west never promised Russia that they won’t expand eastwards. Shevarnadze (former Soviet foreign minister) said that the West never made such a promise, so did Gorby. It is a myth, a fake.

Poor Russians: “The West lied to us”. Oh the moral indignation, “we’ve been wronged, now we can go pillage and murder anyone we like.”

The Russians need to move West, as Siberia in the East is slowly becoming mostly populated by Chinese. Besides, when the Russian Czars looked to Europe, wasn’t that supposed to be a “good” thing?

Many people think that what drove Soviet Imperialism was the communist ideology, it was not. Russians want to occupy other people. The end. Russian monarchs, communist first secretaries, whatever Putin system is, it doesn’t matter. They all got big dreams. In 19th century they were as far as Poland. In 20th, East Germany and everything south to Adriatic.

You know how there’s American Dream? Russian Dream is to have Russia from Kamchatka to Lisbon. It’s not to create success, wealth or improve quality of life, there’s just this pointless aggression to conquer somebody because they’re there. Very primitive, Darwinian, barbarian-like thinking is behind that. The excuse given - it’s done to create buffer zone against possible aggressions from others, is just that, an excuse. Heck, everybody would like a buffer zone, I would like to have a buffer zone.

Even as they conquer those "buffers" and enslave them, to move on to the next, "buffer".

Brings tears to my eyes.
