I have recently started using the term "disarmenter". It was derived from a combination of disarm and demented.
Tomkat, on freerepublic, suggested that the term disarmist was less clumsy and easier to use. Which do you think would be the better term?
dis·arm·en·ter (ds-ärmn-tr) alt. dis·arm·ist (ds-ärmst)
n.
1. A political operative who works to disarm political opposition through the use of irrational and/or emotional arguments.
2. A person who believes that disarming citizens will reduce crime or unjustified violence, in spite of contrary evidence or facts.
3. A person who wishes to disarm others because they do not trust themselves to bear arms responsibly.

I agree, disarmenter does not work as well.
I’m still partial to hoplophobe. It’s a very accurate description of these people. They’re a afraid of tools.
Kind of sounds like “disarmamenter” is intended. But like the word banana, it is easy to spell, not so easy to stop.
Banananananananana!~
I’d suggest the term “disarmunist” rather than either of those.
That said, I do think that “disarmist” is preferable to “disarmenter”. While those people truly are demented, connecting what they’re doing with their mental state makes the latter term unnecessarily clumsy. (The same could probably said about “disamunist” as well.)
I tend to use Lt.Col. Jeff Cooper’s term:
HOPLOPHOBE.
Since anytime a Demoncrat attacks anyone defending their Bill of Rights gets attacked as a “phobe”, send it right back at them!
Since a Freeper suggested “disarmist”...gonna have to go with that.
Besides, it rhymes with “alarmist”.
“Alarmist Disarmist” kind of rolls of the tongue. (And no, I can’t say that three times real fast.)
“I tend to use Lt.Col. Jeff Coopers term:
HOPLOPHOBE.”
I like hoplophobe and I use it. But it does not fit very well in a significant number of circumstances. A significant number of disarmists do not hate and fear firearms. They hate and fear firearms in their opponents hands, of often, simply in any other than government hands.
Why not use COL Jeff Cooper’s term “hoplophobe” — irrational fear of weapons. That pretty much covers it, I think.
DISARMENTATOR- a disarming dictator.
One who arms is an armorer.
One who disarms is thus a disarmorer.
But I prefer hoplophobe because it has a nice perjorative sound to it.
I've been seeing that word a lot lately, and have wondered where it came from, or if it was an actual English word.
Thanks for the explanation. I think I like 'disarmist' better. The construction sounds more logical.
Since you asked, I prefer disarmist.
In any case, thank you for your dedication to this topic. I’m here every day, and I read every one of your posts.
I’ve got an even better one: Disarmophile.
Ping.
Naw, methinks there’s a difference here. A hoplophobe is afraid of the tools. A disarmst doesn’t fear the tools (likely owns ‘em herself and hires others to keep ‘em handy, no qualms about using them) but considers disarming others an axiomatic imperative. Pelosi is clearly the latter.
I call them freedom cowards to their face!
I’d vote for hoplophobe too, but if not, take a page from the leftist playbook, and make it a phobia, so it implies mental illness - like homophobe, just make it a phobia of something respected by society. I’d go with Gunophobe, Defensophobe, Protectophobe, Loyalphobe, Armophobe, Manly-phobe, Masculophobe, Honorphobe, Familophobe, or something similar.
