The Kansas-Nebraska Act

During Pierce’s administration the question of slavery again roiled the nation. The issue always flared up at times when the admission of new states was being considered. Both pro and anti-slavery factions worked hard to win their point. Probably the most important piece of legislation dealing with the question was the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. At its core this bill was an attempt to mollify the pro slavery Democrats who wanted as many new slave states as possible to enter the Union.

Under the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the two states would be allowed to join the union together. Nebraska would come in as a free state and Kansas would be allowed to decide for itself how it would handle the question.

To pass this act the 1820 Missouri Compromise, which prohibited slavery in any state established west of Missouri, had to be repealed. This was of course, another important sellout by the Democrats of Black Americans.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was the direct cause of the horror that came to be known as Bleeding Kansas which scholars have identified as the actual start of the Civil War. People in Kansas who were opposed to slavery were attacked and slaughtered by pro slavery Democrat thugs, many from slave State Missouri. Dozens of pro-freedom Kansans were killed others were kidnapped and tarred and feathered by Democrat raiders. This proves the Hitler’s style of propaganda works; the slogan was “If you tell a lie loudly enough, often enough and with enough conviction it becomes truth.”
