Hey all,
September's been a difficult month. I lost my Gus on the 6th, almost 14. Had been nursing him through since December, last few months were pretty busy taking care of him.
Anyway, his roomie Dex had been of food/water and I took him in and he's anemic. They sent the blood away to determine if the anemia is due to something acute, like internal bleed/ulcer , or more chronic anemia, like kidney/liver/bone marrow kind of issue.
He's also a "senior" animal so all i really ask is that we can find out what the cause is so we can determine a strategy to deal with it, if possible.
I wanted to also ask for prayers for my mom and in particular her right arm and shoulder, she's been using it a lot and she probably overdid it. Prayers for healing and pain relief would be gratefully accepted for her.
Thanks, and I appreciate everyone's'prayers for Dex and my mom,and for all the prayers for the other times I've asked here for different things.
Prayers going up.
I’m a dog lover—I have a 10 yr old Labradoodle, who’s beginning to really show her age, and a 3 yr old labradoodle/labrodoodle mix—a real mutt, but adorable and smart.
Prayers up.
I will be praying for answers and relief for Dex, and for your mother’s pain to be manageable and diminishing. Hang in there!
Prayers said for your mom and Dex.
Dear Lord Jesus,
Creation was made by You for You, so all living things are important to You.
You know how important Dex is to Secret Agent Man. It was You who put a love for animals in his heart.
So I ask you, Dear Lord, to touch Dex and heal his body. Give the vets wisdom and comfort Secret Agent Man. Be with Dex and take away his anxiety over his friend Gus. Let him be happy and healthy once again.
In Your Name I Pray,
Amen
I assume Gus and Dex are dogs? What kind?
This is the hardest part about having pets, especially if they’re large dogs. They tend to go about 12 years max. I noticed my yellow lab - age 7 - is already slowing down. My 7-year old flat-coat retriever is also showing signs of arthritis.
With that said, will send prayers up.
Prayers for your Mom and Dex.
Big Prayers from me; I’m crazy about dogs and love them.
Prayers for all, know that we are here for you!
Prayers.
Tonight, prayers up for all creatures great and small, wherever - or whomever - they may be.
prayers up!
thanks everyone for your prayers.
got word today it appears his anemia is chronic. he’s not making enough new red blood cells. next step tomorrow is getting an xray of his chest to see if there’s anything unusual about his thyroid gland.
if not there’s a lot more it could be. liver and kidney issues, bone marrow issues, inflammatory diseases can be a cause, vitamin deficiencies of certain critical ones used in making red blood cells.
so that’s where we are now. i am just trying to make sure he stays strong and can keep eating enough, and stays hydrated, and out of any major pain.
thanks again, continued prayers for him are welcome.
Anemia can also be caused by the bacteria transmitted from a tick bite. My own dogs have had this happen to them.
I’m sad to hear of this. Dogs are wonderful companions. I pray that this sadness passes quick and leaves only the good memories behind.
Hi all,
thanks again for all your prayers.
Sad to inform Dex passed away early Thursday morning. He had a vet appointment set for 9am and I was holding him all night to make sure he made it. He died with me around 3 am.
I had our vet do a necropsy. Dex had a thymoma (thymus cancer) and it had spread into a vein, and that vein had leaked blood into his pericardium (sac aroudn the heart). To the point that the fluid made his heart unable to pump blood.
Our ER hospital not too far away could probably have drained it and put a tube in, which would have solved the short-term emergency and stabilized him. However dealing with the thymoma would have involved a very risky operation - at best - for him, as a small animal, and the radiation therapy would have really been hard on him. The point would have been to give him good quality of life as long as possible, and I just don’t think he’d have gotten that through a really hard operation and radiation side effects.
Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers. It’s been a real sad month for us. I know I get them back one day, it’s just the loss of their joy.
I’m so sorry! I was just thinking of Dex and wondered how he was doing. I am sorry to hear this. Hugs to you.
