GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WJZ) The Anne Arundel County Fraternal Order of Police is raising some eyebrows after making a substantial donation to the defense fund of Ferguson, Missouri officer Darren Wilson.
Mike Hellgren explains why the union decided to make the donation.
Anne Arundel Countys Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 70 has donated $1,070 to a defense fund for Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson, whose shooting of African-American teenager Michael Brown has led to protests nationwide.
Carl Snowden, head of the Caucus of African-American leaders, condemned the donation.
It smacks of racial insensitivity. It smacks of destroying the kind of partnership that the county police department says that it wants to have with members of the African-American Latino community, Snowden said.
The police union gave the money the same day the chief attended a rally and vigil, where he addressed whats happening in Ferguson and said hes determined to build trust in Anne Arundel.
Were only as good as our partnerships with the community. And if those partnerships arent strong, a critical incident like the one were seeing now in Ferguson, Missouri can have long-lasting ramifications, Chief Davis said.
The head of the FOP here, OBrien Atkinson, said his members wanted to provide some comfort to those officers who are working around the clock to keep peace in Ferguson and the national FOP suggested they donate to this defense fund. He says he hopes to provide due process to the officer at the center of the investigation.
He told The Baltimore Sun due process can be difficult with the media and political attention the case is getting.
His unions donation is a hot top across the county.
You cant trust them. Theyre going to defend him to the hilt even if hes guilty. They could have raised some money and given it to Browns family, said Robert Matthews.
The chief says hes confident ongoing investigations, including by the Department of Justice, will provide answers to what happened in Ferguson.
Yep. If the state won’t charge him, Holder will.
The irony is lost on racists like this.
I hope he rakes in a mil !!
Sometimes Marylanders do something that isn’t shallow and stupid.
But wait for backlash from neighboring Baltimore yoots.
Ping!
The black community is racial insensitive. And Latino’s have nothing to do with this.
What a paltry amount.
If every individual and organization who support Officer Wilson did as much, it would add up quickly.
Raising some Eyebrows?
Where?
At the Al Sharpie School of Racial Hand Grenades?
At the NAACP?
Why is that a surprise?
Why is that a News Flash? That a Law Enforcement Association support their own?
You do realize that you doubled the 'racist' ante by noticing it?
I told everyone that I live in a RED county in a deep blue state!!! So proud of Anne Arundel!
Two places: next door in Prince George's County, one of the wealthiest black populations in the country, and just north where Anne Arundel County abuts Baltimore City. And when you calculate in that Maryland broadcast media is pretty much controlled by whatever affects Baltimore, there you go.
And while Holders goons are "investigating", the process ties up some of the evidence that is key to Wilson's defense - just another facet of the filth on the Left.
