‘Sister Wives’ Recap: Polygamy Not Appealing To Most Of Brown Teens
Hollywood Life ^ | June 30, 2014 | Bonnie Fuller

On the June 29th episode of ‘Sister Wives,’ Kody Brown and his wives were confronted by the troubling truth that the family’s practice of polygamy could come to an end with their own generation, as their teens spoke out.

Sister Wives‘ Kody Brown and his four wives — Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn — risked jail time and the breakup of their family out of devotion to their Mormon fundamentalist polygamist faith. So it must be pretty hard to listen when they hear that their oldest children — Logan, 19, Madison, 17, Mykelti, 17, and Aspyn, 18 — speak out about their lack of commitment to following a polygamist lifestyle.

‘Sister Wives’ Teens – Kody Brown’s Children Hate Polygamy

None of the four teens is hell bent, to say the least, on having a polygamous marriage. And not only that, neither Madison nor Aspyn are very interested in marrying at all. Interesting how being surrounded by multiple mothers living for one man can turn a girl away from the whole institution.

Nevertheless, you have to give kudos to Kody and his four wives — they’ve clearly raised very thoughtful, level-headed and ambitious children. Despite growing up in a crowded family of 17 kids, these four don’t seem to suffer from lack of attention or self-esteem.

Logan, the eldest child in the family, is a sophomore in college and now lives away from home with two non-religious roommates.

“The biggest question I get,” admits Logan, “is whether I’ll live in plural marriage.” His answer, at least for now, is “no.”

“Right now, I’d say no, but I see so many benefits, that maybe in the future, but not now.”

Logan, shockingly, admits that despite his parents’ ultra-conservative pre-marital no hand-holding and kissing rules, he has hugged and kissed.

“I don’t feel like it’s wrong — I’m more liberal than my dad,” he explains.

Speaking of more liberal than the rest of the family, daughter Madison is adamant that she will NOT be polygamist and, furthermore, she WILL kiss a guy.

“I think that if you’re into a guy, it’s okay to kiss him,” she insists. She’s also very clear that she’s “not going to be a polygamist” and she plans to go to law school and become a “prosecutor working for a D.A., somewhere on the East Coast.” Go Maddie! She wants a very modern and progressive life.

The Brown Kids Are Still VERY Conservative

Daughter Aspyn is the only Brown teen interviewed who has left the door to polygamy open a crack.

“I’ve changed my mind between wanting to be a polygamist or a monogamist. I go back and forth,” she explains, but then points out that it will depend on who she falls in love with. If she falls for a polygamist, she may go for it.

But what’s more surprising, and probably disappointing to Kody and his wives, is that she’s not really interested in marriage at all!

“I really want children, but I don’t want to get married now,” she explains. What Aspyn does want a lot is to become an elementary school teacher. She’s well on her way, majoring in elementary education — go Aspyn!

Then there’s Mykelti, who says, “I don’t see myself with a husband, but I’d like to adopt kids, because I had such a good childhood.” What’s with all this disinterest in husbands, Kody?

Mykelti’s far more passionate about pursuing a fashion designer career, which is admirable, because that’s “100 percent” what she wants to do.

The Brown’s extreme conservatism about pre-marital sex has had some positive benefits. While their teens rebel against the idea that you can’t even hold hands or kiss pre-marriage, the four young people are clearly very conservative themselves about their own sexual behavior. All are most definitely still virgins and Mykelti did end up dumping her boyfriend, John, after her parents gave her and John the anti-hand-holding talk. She ‘coincidentally’ happened to decide that “it wouldn’t have worked out.”

Aspyn also confesses that she pushes away “guys who just want to get laid. They’re not getting anything.” And really that IS a refreshing attitude after being inundated by Miley Cyrus and the Jenner sisters’ unabashed sexuality at a young age.

In what’s the best line of the episode, Christine says, “monogamists are very boring,” making you wonder if there is more action going on between Kody and his four wives than they ever let on before.

Janelle Brown Tackles Weight Loss Struggle

Finally, Janelle, in a change of subject, pours her heart out about her weight loss struggles and admits that “I’m an emotional eater. I eat during stress.” Poor Janelle has been stuck at her weight of 236 pounds for weeks after dropping from 260 lbs., and her trainer Sean is trying to get her past her plateau. Good news on the Kody front is that he’s “never said one word about my weight,” Janelle reveals. Good for you, Kody!

Finally, Sean gets Janelle to climb up a mountain to symbolically prove she CAN overcome her big hurdle. Janelle and the kids ended up giving you lots to cheer for on Sister Wives this week.

Do you agree, HollywoodLifers, and are you happy that the Brown teens don’t plan to be polygamists? Let me know!

In what way did they risk jail? Unless they violate tax laws or attempt to register the later unions as legal marriages, no prosecutor is going to come after them.

I guess you missed the huge kerfuffle that went to the US District Court:

On December 13, 2013, Federal Judge Clark Waddoups ruled that portions of Utah's ban on multiple cohabitation were unconstitutional and found in favor of the Browns, but also allowed Utah to maintain its ban on multiple marriage licenses.

Oooh, old fashioned morality laws actually put into force, or attempted at any rate. I am astonished.

Notice they were slapped down and it probably opened the door for polygamy in Utah, despite their state constitution specifically banning it? Read the whole Wiki entry if you’re curious as to what happened, if you haven’t already.

Two notes:

NONE of these people belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, (the Mormons). They would be excommunicated - do not pass GO, do not collect another wife.

I’m not in favor of polygamy, and certainly not in favor of gay “marriage”. But polygamous “marriage” is more logical than faggot “marriage”.

Right now, I’d say no, but I see so many benefits

The only "benefit" would be having multiples in the marriage bed and "wife" #1 not able to complain. Strange, I don't see that church allowing women to have multiple "husbands".

Why did the big men of certain periods of antiquity set up harems as soon as they were able to afford them, I wonder? One of which was proclaimed the wisest man who ever lived? But I take your point.

My friend and I watch this show so we can snark about it together. The Browns are a bunch of morons and the women are miserable. No wonder the kids don't want anything to do with polygamy.

I have to wonder if welfare fraud was part of the Utah AG's investigation. Two of the wives admit to being on welfare/using food stamps, one of them well into filming the show. Every one of the wives and the husband have filed for bankruptcy at one time or another.

Having watched the show a few times, I think he might mean multiple people engaged in child care, education and rearing, multiple cooks and cleaning/errand running people, multiple streams of income, the secure feeling of a large family plus what you mentioned. The husband actually sees the multiple beds as something of a headache, but he obviously believes in the tenets of his religion.

What the polygamist man needs / hopes for:

Porn star in the bedroom
Julia Childs in the Kitchen
Alice the maid for housekeeping
SuperModel for going out on the town

What the polygamist ends up with:

Julia Childs with a knife in the bedroom
Alice the maid cooking dinner in the mop bucket
Porn star with no house keeping skills as the maid
SuperModel spending the man’s money while out on the town

Stella 1: Harcourt! Harcourt Fenton Mudd, what have you been up to? Have you been drinking again? You answer me!

Harry Mudd: Shut up.

Stella 1: You miserable, conniving toad!

Harry Mudd: I order you, shut up!

Stella 1: Going out all night and giving me silly stories!

Stella 2: Harcourt!

Harry Mudd: Aaahhh!

Stella 2: Harcourt Fenton Mudd, you’ve been overeating again, and drinking!

Harry Mudd: Kirk, you can’t do this. It’s inhuman!

Stella 2: You need constant supervision. My work’s cut out for me.

Stella 1: Harcourt!

Stella 500: Have you ever seen a worm in alcohol! You’re on a regular schedule!

Harry Mudd: No. Number 500?

The Mormon church told its members to stop practicing polygamy in order for Utah to gain statehood. In the temples, however, they still teach that it’s an eternal principle sent by God.

Good thing none of the millions of single, out-of-wedlock or monogamous married people in this country are getting those welfare checks. Oh, wait... LOL

Yeah, we get to pay for their “American dream”.

Looking at those pics, I’d especially love to go upside the head of that surfer idiot.

Good news on the Kody front is that he’s “never said one word about my weight,” Janelle reveals.

That's because she's one of the only adults in that mess with a paying job.

And yet they all qualified for mortgages on 4 very nice houses.

I would love to know how much this show is paying them. These people are the anti-Duggars.
