I kept looking at him suspiciously, because I remembered our neighbour who stated (OK he was completely drunk) that he had brilliant plan to end this siege. When we asked him how, he explained that he will shoot at the airplanes, and when they respond to that they will bomb whole area and everything will end.

One of most stupid things that I ever heard. It was like shooting the man who brings you sandwich when you are hungry but desperate folks will talk lot of nonsense.

“I am just thinking how funny and how far away we are to that pilot up there. He looks down and sees some buildings and smoke, some shitty place, and then 15 minutes later he is out of the whole area, going home, or wherever out of this mess. Can you imagine how cool is that to be out from here in 15 minutes?” he asked me.

“No I do not” I hated discussion like that, “what if” or “imagine if we..” or “only if…”

We were here, and thats it. I learned or trained myself to live and think only for today or only few days into the future. I learn not to hope too much. Hope can be shitty thing when it proves to be false.

My documentary filmmaker son went to Bosnia during that war to film an orphanage full of children whose parents had been killed. That is one outcome of wars that is usually overlooked - children with no parents, nowhere to go.

I've written before that during this time in Bosnia, he and his cameraman saw fighting going on and they were behind bushes and filming that battle. Son said he made a decision then. The film he was making that minute could get him killed and the film would be seen by people and when the film was ended, they would get up and go to the kitchen for food or go to the bathroom. He said his life was worth more than that, so he would not get that close to fighting again.

We don't know what might happen here, natural disasters or man made disasters. We can prepare to be able to sustain ourselves, not having to rely on outside sources, such as the electric utility system or water utility system, or the grocery store, or drug store for medical supplies, or sanitation supplies, or security from an outside source. That is life insurance and I have it. Some prepare and some don't. That's a choice each one may make.

Selco was not prepared. He was a paramedic which helped him take care of his family but he had no supplies in any area of living. What they had at the moment the war started was it. Now, he is prepared for any happening. We can learn from his having nothing and trying to keep his family alive. It's all here now for us to have, gradually building up a supply of needed supplies.

In earlier times, our parents and certainly their parents had to supply themselves as govn. hadn't entered their lives that much. They had their own canned food, a water well, oil lamps/candles, medical supplies as doctors were far away from them, rifles were important to have for game they ate. They had chickens and cows. They had horses and buggies for travel. Their world was their property and what it provided them.

The world got more sophisticated and advances were made and here came cars that need fuel and repair, and electric wires that sometimes quit, and water lines that sometimes quit, and medical care too expensive unless you buy insurance which is now priced out of most people's ability to pay, and handguns/rifles that govn. now wants to take away from citizens, and FEMA who says they can save you if you believe that - it's all “iffy” that it works. If you have your existence prepared to do it yourself, that is not “iffy”, because you have it yourself.
