Stop Saying “That’s So Gay!”: 6 Types of Microaggressions That Harm LGBTQ People

(big time BARF ALERT!)
When I was a little kid, I used to hear my brothers, cousins, and friends say things like “That’s so gay!” on a pretty regular basis. I would usually laugh along, hoping with all my might that they didn’t know my secret. My parents and other adults in my life would tell me things like “Boys don’t cry” or “Be a man!” which essentially was their way of telling me that being emotional was forbidden or a sign of weakness.

When I was a teenager, there were a few boys at my high school who ridiculed me, almost everyday. When I walked by them in the halls, they called me a “faggot” or screamed my name in a flamboyant tone. I learned to walk by without showing any reaction; I could not let them know that it bothered me, or else I would be proving to them that I was indeed gay. I didn’t tell anyone about the bullying (not my parents, teachers, or anyone) because admitting that I was being teased for being gay would mean that I was admitting to being gay. I had never felt so alone in my life.

In college, it got a little better. While I was no longer harassed about my closeted sexual orientation, I didn’t have any friends that were openly gay and most of my friends didn’t have any either. Some of my friends and family members still made occasional homophobic jokes in front of me. While many loved ones later told me that they suspected that I was gay, no one gave me any reason to believe that they were gay-friendly.

If luggbutts (LGBT etc. — if there is a standard order to the letters nobody has posited it yet) hate it, it may not be half bad.

“Gay” in its current sense might be an apt word to describe something that has gotten passionately and showily sidetracked into illegitimate things en route to its intended goal, and is currently frozen in impotence.

Example: “The GOP is so gay.”

Looking for love in the wrong place.

These folks are dissing God, Who would actually give them something better to do and be if they gave Him a chance.

Trouble is, a lot if not most are busy cussing God out. He can’t even get close until they are willing to quit that.

Perhaps the homosexuals should stop telling all of us what to do. That’s more than microaggression.

build a bridge and get over it

Yep.

There were a few boys at my HS who ridiculed me, too. I'd make a guess that's true for dammed near everyone. This fool needs to dump his persecution complex and get on with his life.

I'd say that this author is symptomatic of the whole "anti-bullying" thing that we're seeing in society today. It would seem that young people think that they have the God-given right to always feel good about themselves, and always to have their actions positively affirmed by everyone, everywhere.

What a cold bucket of water real life will be when it hits them in the face. I'm not looking forward to adjudicating every perceived slight and insult amongst my employees in a few years. "Mr WBill! He looked like he might disrespect my selection of gender for today!! Make him stoooooop!!"

The Alinskyites have a patent on “microagression.” It’s called Rule #5.

When I was a Republican, there were a few liberals in the media who ridiculed me, almost everyday. When I voted, they called me a “racist”. I learned to continue watching the news without showing any reaction; I could not let them know that it bothered me, or else I would be proving to them that I was indeed a racist. I didn’t tell anyone about the bullying (not my president, friends, or anyone) because admitting that I was being harassed for being Republican would mean that I was admitting to being racist. I had never felt so alone in my life.

The author's point is not valid. Just because you are called something does not make it an epithet (it may be true). Just because you complain about it doesn't validate their remark.

Here is the original for comparison:

When I was a teenager, there were a few boys at my high school who ridiculed me, almost everyday. When I walked by them in the halls, they called me a “faggot” or screamed my name in a flamboyant tone. 2) Endorsement of heteronormative culture and behaviors: - These kinds of microaggressions take place when an LGBTQ person is assumed to be heterosexual, or when they are encouraged to act in gender-conforming ways. I know that I’ve been told that I shouldn’t be so flamboyant...

Flamboyancy isn't genetic. It is a behavioral mechanism and it is affected action that is learned. And it is annoying ("Oh stop! Look at meee dearie...."). So is Valley Girl speak.

...As a young adult, when someone asked me “if I had a girlfriend” or “a wife or kids”, they were essentially telling me that they expected me to be heterosexual.

Newsflash: "They" ask heterosexuals these questions too even if they don't already have kids or a wife. It is "SOCIETAL NORMATIVE". It brings stability and produces the next generation of the species.

...Heterosexuals don’t realize that it is common for them to assume someone is straight, unless proven otherwise.

He got his panties in a wad earlier in this article when his peers correctly identifying him as homosexualist even when he was closeted. Now it is "offensive" to perceive him to be heterosexual. Can't satisfy the eternally offended class...

while bisexual people have reported that they are often stereotyped as being “confused” (Nadal, Issa, et al., 2011)

Homosexuals themselves say that "bisexuals" are "confused" or "afraid to come out of the closet". As posted by someone else, why is questioning/curious always "assured" to be homo and never the mistake made by a heterosexual? De Blascio's wife is an "ex-gay". The pink journalists are silent. However, they said Anne Heche was "crazy" for leaving Ellen DeGeneres for a man and marriage.

In everyday life, a common occurrence is when people assume that LGBTQ people would be child molesters and are wary about LGBTQ teachers or babysitters.

If it protects one child from a lifetime of psychological problems and chemical addictions...

Anytime that any straight man assumes that I would hit on them, not only are they mistakenly flattering themselves

Repeating the lie that homosexuals NEVER hit on a straight man. Their gaydar is never wrong. And lesbians never stalk drunken sorority or roller derby girls to initiate them into lesbianism....

There’s nothing “gay” about engaging in, celebrating, encouraging and legitimizing sodomy. Homosexuality is unnatural, immoral, repugnant, destructive and a sin against God.

>>Microaggression, the new PC word of the day. Control the dictionary and you control the world.

So what can you do? Well, first of all, let’s get everyone to stop saying things like “That’s so gay!” or “That’s so queer!” If something is weird, say it’s “weird”!

Queer used to mean a special kind of weird, until faggots took it for their own (gay meant happy in a less perverted America). If you call them weird or abberant, you are a H8TR!!!

- questionable, suspicious

- differing in some odd way from what is usual or normal

- eccentric, unconventional (2) : mildly insane : touched

- absorbed or interested to an extreme or unreasonable degree : obsessed

- not quite well

(from merriam-webster)

One of the reasons why it was important for me to study microaggressions against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) people was because I knew that this type of discrimination existed and because I hypothesized that they had a significant impact on the lives of LGBTQ people, particularly on their mental health and identity development. I collaborated with two fellow psychologist colleagues, Dr. David Rivera and Dr. Melissa Corpus, and we theorized the various types of microaggressions that affect LGBTQ people (see Nadal et al., 2010). For the past several years, my research team and I interviewed all kinds of LGBTQ people and they all reported that microaggressions are very common in their lives.

It's been said time and time again that people go into psychology to figure out what is wrong with themselves. Homosexuals are drama queens ("OMG, LOOK AT ME!!THAT'S SOOOO TRUEEEE"). Gay "psychologists" were also key at changing how "science" looked at homosexual desires. Infiltrate the field and define the "science". Same with Log Cabin et al "Republicans".

Is it still OK to say a dude is so gay if he’s actually heterosexual but acts flamboyant?

Is it still OK to say “That’s so gay!” to a dude if he’s into interior decorating or some other profession heavily populated by homosexuals?

I turned on the TV the other night, and saw that the Wizard of Oz was on. Being that it starred Judy Garland, I couldn’t help myself. Before I knew it, I yelled, “That’s so gay!”

Please forgive my microaggression.

Microaggression, the new PC word of the day.

Thank you, the idiot purveyors of fashionable European philosophy, where it's now impossible to tout something you like as awesome, without "the Other" taking offense because you have excluded them. Don't grow a stache for Movember, because you'll microaggress against women, minorities, and transgendered who can't grow facial hair as well as you. If you're a white pop singer, don't wear a kimono; that's racist. Don't assume men marrying women are the norm, because "heteronormativity" will exclude people in non-traditional arrangements. And so forth.

I could puke, but I wouldn't want to offend those with stronger stomachs for fashionable bafflegab.
