Academics of the University of Sarajevo announce the [WWI] conference
Aleksandra' Note:
I have only one question at this time:
Will Serbia's position be represented at this World War One conference in Sarajevo in June of 2014, and will Serbs be present at this conference?
Sincerely,
Aleksandra Rebic

A major international conference about the First World War will see 120 scholars from 28 countries meet in Sarajevo in 2014.
The conference, The Position of the First World War in the History of Europe, will be held on the 19th-21st June 2014 at the University of Sarajevo.
Scholars from 26 European countries and the US and Canada have already confirmed their attendance to the conference, which will "discuss all aspects that led to the outbreak of World War I".
Professor Husnija Kamberovic, Director of the Institute for History at the University of Sarajevo, stated that one of the aims of the conference is "to re-consider the political aspects of the conflict", including relations between the great powers on the eve of the First World War, as well as the role of smaller countries.
The formation of alliances - and their geopolitical and ideological bases - will also be explored, as well the conflict between imperial systems and growing nationalism.
The experiences of "common folk" during the First World War - both on the battlefield and the home front - will also be considered, as well as the immediate and long-term impact of the conflict on the development of European societies.

My prediction: Bolsheviks will be heavily represented among the “scholars”.
Count on it.
And the skinny little wannabes the Progressives.
Will the Frogs admit they wanted to get back at Germany because they got their sh*t stomped in the Franco-Prussian War ???
Good question
Dan Carlin from Hardcore History has started an excellent podcast series on WWI. I love his work-it’s like listening to William Shatner drop wicked knowledge bombs on fascinating periods of history. His podcast of the Eastern Front and the Mongols were amazing.
I’ll have to look that up.
Shot to hell....
Ditto on Dan Carlin.
Your one sentence sums up the origin of WW I in a nutshell.
Barbara Tuchman says as much, as well.
Definitely worthwhile. I listen on my Ipad during the commute.I dread when his multi-part lecture. It’s like getting to the end of a great book.
That's quite a bit better defined than the headline. Unfortunately it's quite a bit more limited. What was most politically significant about the First World War IMHO was not how it came to be but what it resulted in despite the intentions of the participants. Four empires fell, for example: the Hohenzollern, the Habsburg, the Romanov, and the Ottoman. In a single year. The entire shape of 20th century history was remolded in the space of a few short months. And not just 20th century history - the Romanovs had been around for three centuries, the Habsburgs and the Hohenzollerns had been around for half a millennium or so, the Ottomans even more. That, historically speaking, is staggering, a watershed the like of which has, as far as I know, never been seen before. That will take more than one conference to sort out, for sure.
If you have a link to his download page and get a chance to post it, I would appreciate it. If you don’t have a chance to do this we can each look it up if we get the time.
