Why Does the State License Barbers?
Capitol Confidential ^ | 11/1/2013 | Jarrett Skorup

Posted on 11/05/2013 10:00:45 AM PST by MichCapCon

It isn't much, but at least it's something.

Senate Bill 612, sponsored by Sen. Hoon-Yung Hopgood, D-Taylor, would "reduce from 2,000 hours to the 1,800 hours the number of hours of instruction at a ‘licensed barber college’ that an individual must accumulate before he or she is allowed by the state to earn a living at this trade."

The state requires 2,000 hours of education in a "barber college" to work, compared to only 1,200 hours of education to be a lawyer. According to the Institute for Justice (IJ), which monitors licensing in every state, Michigan’s mandate is among the highest in the nation.

Michigan Capitol Confidential last year asked Michigan Barber School Director Darryl Green about the requirement:

"It does have a lot to do with public health," Green said. "I'm not saying we are as important as doctors, but we are the closest you can get. We are turning this into the Wild, Wild West. It’s not important? OK. I’d like to see them get a haircut in a barber shop five years from now. It will be like rolling the dice." Prior to this past September, the state of Alabama had no licensing requirement for barbers. A search for deaths or injuries caused by haircuts at Alabama barber shops yielded no results.

A 2012 bill from State Rep. Tom McMillin, R-Rochester Hills, would eliminate the mandate for barbers completely.

Often, the purpose of licensure is to protect certain industries at the expense of consumers and other workers. For this reason, IJ lists three questions policymakers should ask when discussing a license:

Is an occupation unlicensed in other states? Are the licensure burdens for an occupation high compared to other states? Are the licensure burdens for an occupation high compared to other occupations with greater safety risks? The answer for barbers in Michigan is “yes,” “yes,” and “yes.” Thus, like dozens of other silly mandates the state requires, licensing for barbers should be eliminated.

Back in the way old days, barbers were also surgeons, blood letters and such.
Not so today. 2000 hours and licensing is not necessary for simple hair cutting.

When someone has a straight razor on my neck I feel a lot more comfortable knowing that they’ve had some training.

Good to see that some politicians are exercising the benefits of federalism.

Idiot. I cut my own hair when I was six. It looked pretty good. A monkey with a Flobee could do it too.

government should leave us alone

for 300 years Americans prospered on this continent with practically zero government. for 300 years (1600-1900) there was almost no government . now we have 1000x the technology given to us by capitalism( example smart phone etc) so what do we need government for? nothing

now government is getting more involved(totally taking over) healthcare. how did that work out in gov schools, public housing projects? didn't work at all cause socialism/government can never work.

hey idiot democrats , government is an evil cancer that in no way should be involved in education, healthcare etc. you morons. the only thing gov should be involved in is in military and border control (at federal level), some police and courts at local level and that's it idiots

already we work 6 months of the year to pay our government masters taxes so that arrogant asses at Harvard can do fake global warming studies.

7.5% social security and medicare tax
federal income tax
obamcare taxes
state income taxes
property taxes

hidden taxes on business they have to pay and pass on to us (a 23% tax for all the gov regulations and taxes businesses have to pay )

This is not enough say the government funded scientists and university professors who do fake global warming research to further enslave us. also welfare creeps say they need a new 60 inch tv and $300 sneakers. in obamacare/socialism there will be shortages of everything

socialism = shortages, rationing, very low quality , poverty and we become slaves of the government. this is the dream of all democrats

2000 hours is ridiculous and obscene, but keep in mind that other than barbers, the only other profession allowed to touch razor sharp objects to someone's skin - are doctors.

No training or licensing at all? I don't think so.

Fifteen minutes for a Totin' Chip card would be plenty.

I think at one time when barbers were doing a lot of lye process treatments on black customers, there were often screw-ups that resulted in the customer being severely burned.

Same reason I have to be licensed. I have a Master’s degree in Library Science and have been doing my job for 26 years. I know how to do my job. I don’t need to be regulated. But, there it is.

A tax to do my job.
