Well, there is good news in the government shutdown. The Federal budget deficit is DECREASING in real time. See here.
usdebtclocjk100313
This comes on top of the news that many Federal employees are non-essential. This comes from AP.
In general, about 60 percent of the 2.1 million federal workforce is still working during the shutdown. But some not-so-loved federal agencies cant even muster 10 percent on the essential meter.
The Environmental Protection Agency, often a whipping boy for Republicans in Congress, has only 6 percent of its workers listed as essential. So does the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Ever the decimal counters, the Internal Revenue Service has only 9.3 percent working during the shutdown.
On the low side of the essential ranking, you can find the departments of Education (10 percent), Treasury (18 percent), Interior (20 percent), and Labor (22 percent).
US 5 year credit default swaps (CDS) have risen slightly on government default fears. Back to April 2013 levels.

In fact, the 5 year US CDS is below the average since 2008. Hardly a reason to quiver.

Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has joined the ranks of the They Live cast by casting dire warnings if Congress doesnt do EXACTLY what President Obama and Dirty Harry Reid order them to do.

In other words, there is no real threat of a default despite the saber rattling by the Obama Administration. It is all Kabuki theater.
Here is Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) on the Senate floor telling Republicans to obey.

Been saying for quite a long time that about 90 percent of the federal gub mint is absolutely worthless along with their employees.
They made an error with “Education” and put a “1” on the number.
Don’t really need either one.
We don’t use “essential” and “Non-essential” any more.
It’s “exempt” and “nonexempt”. A bit less insulting.
All of those numbers are too high...
That’s what I was about to say.
If it goes on too long, more people will realize this. That’s what got the democrats and most republicans scared sh1tless.
Yes, what they fear most is their, and their god’s,
irrelevance
to people’s everyday lives.
>> We dont use essential and Non-essential any more.

Actually, the two groupings are not the same. The exempt/non-exempt categorization refers to whether the employee slot is exempt or not from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The breakdown will often, but not necessarily fall along the lines of wage grade versus professional grade (i.e., unionized vs. non-unionized). Indeed, a different rule book applies to the categories, but it is not necessarily the same as essential vs. non-essential.
People put too much emphasis on the terms essential and non-essential. As regards Federal government jobs, they really do not mean what you think they mean. More often than not they refer to the type of funding that pays for a given position NOT the importance of the work. That is why they use the term “exempt” now.
In DOD there are many “non essential” personnel who have been sent home and whose job entails important mission critical work for National Defense.
“Deficit declining”; “Almost everything running and smoothly”
some of the threads here.
I’m thinking we tell the “non-essential” federals to go out and find real jobs, like the rest of America.
And job audits for their remaining supervisors.
EPA, HUD, Education...? None of them are essential.
Many government positions seem to be make-work for slackers, malcontents and losers...positions at all levels up to and including the Presidency.
Notice how things are running so smoothly with 40% of the Federal Government non-essential .... couldn’t have legislated a better result to improve efficiency and reduce waste in government!!!!
In fact, I can just imagine these “non-essential” administrators, regulators or enforcers at home yelling at their spouses, beating their kids and kicking the dog out of frustration, loss of total control, and just general spite at the infamous “Tea Party Terrorists”. After a couple of weeks we will have furloughed administrators, regulators and enforcers “going postal” and initiating widespread massacres.
Federal employees are being told how to apply for unemployment benefits during the shutdown!
Thanks whitedog57.

No, I know what you mean with exempt/nonexempt for FLSA, but this is a different categorization.
I just went through managing the furlough for my field office. “Exempt” refers to activities that were for protection of life and property and revenue generating activities related to them. FLSA had nothing to do with it.
I’m furloughed. I haven’t kicked my dog yet or screamed at my husband, and I doubt I’ll start. I understand what’s happening here and I stand with Senator Cruz.
