Amid the lowlights of the media coverage of Texas Sen. Ted Cruzs speech (actual Politico.com headline: Experts: Dr. Seuss Would Be Offended ), its easy to skip how the press was overlooking the obvious accomplishment happening before their eyes:
Cruz was winning.
No, Cruz wasnt winning the vote count in the U.S. Senate to defund Obamacare. That was never going to happen.
And even if the John McCain surrender caucus had stood strong, bringing five red-state Democrats with them, Cruz still would have lost. President Obama would have vetoed, and the bar in the Senate would have risen to 67 no votes on Obamacare. Currently impossible.
But the big, fat, glaring I-cant-believe-MSNBC-cant-see-this win is that Obamacare is once again front-and-center of the political debate.
As The Weekly Standards Bill Kristol pointed out on Boston Herald Radio yesterday, it wasnt supposed to be that way. Cruz has succeeded in turning (Obamacares future) into an open question.
Democrats like Sen. McCain (what did I miss something) did their best yesterday to make Obamas case:
Elections have consequences, and those elections were clear in a significant majority that a majority of the American people supported the president. I think all of us should respect the outcome of elections which reflects the will of the people.
Ah, but the will of the people based on mountains of poll data is that they either dont like Obamacare, hate Obamacare or want it tied to a concrete block and dropped into a lake.
And then theres the matter of the 10 and 12 elections that gave anti-Obamacare Republicans control of the House.
If McCain and Co. had their way, the fight would be over and Obamacare would be a fait accompli.
Instead, Democrats running in 2014 will now be forced to defend this wildly unpopular program a program whose wheels seem to be getting wobblier by the minute.
Sure, 2014 was already going to be ugly for Democrats. In 21 hours, it got even uglier.
Tell me again how Ted Cruz lost?
He's doing what I elected him to do.

Ted Cruz = Lone Ranger
There is only one scenario in which Ted Cruz “lost”:
Obamacare is implemented and people like it.
In all others he wins, some soon, some later. But he wins.
And he knows it.
God Bless Ted Cruz... I will be praying for this man of courage!
The disgusting thing is the republican establishment back stabbing him at every turn.....John Cornyn actually said he and Cruz are great friends and they went hunting together. All while he was trying to torpedo him. Every time one of these bastards get in front of a camera it’s to praise him for the benefit of the folks back home. But when they act it’s to betray him and us!!!
Really? Is it so hard to understand that we have never really had a debate about this law and that the people who supposedly like it know nothing about its realities?
Is it so hard to understand that the MSM would never have brought the huge flaws of this law to the attention of its audience without someone standing up and saying the obvious?
Bringing the genuine idiocy and foolishness of this law to the attention of the US voter is what happened.
Ted Cruz did the right thing.
Not a single republican senator at the time (AND THIS INCLUDES YOU JOHN MCCAIN!!!) took to the floor to filibuster Obamacare. They did absolutely nothing to delay or obstruct it, mainly because Mitch McConnell was scared of defying literally anybody.
I really don’t think the next election will be as bad for Democrats as pundits think. I think it is going to be bad for a lot of incumbents. I don’t think there is any excitement to vote for the surrender caucus, and the results will more likely be a wash in turnovers.
I agree. The GOP has done nothing to excite their base and nothing to attract anyone outside their base. They've literally done nothing. Their bet is that people decide they dislike democrats so much they will hold their noses and vote GOP. For this to work they have to actually help the country fail so they can stir up resentment against democrats. For their current strategy to succeed, America must fail. They are unworthy of serving.
Do us a favor, John. Just join the Democratic party and stop sabotaging the efforts of those who are trying to accomplish something.
McCain made a fool of himself but in his mind he’s thinking “boy I really showed him what for!!” And of course the democrats patted him on the back because he’s one of their dependable votes.
McCain is a media darling because they love Republicans who speak ill of other Republicans. If McCain changed party affiliation, he would be a nobody, and he knows it.
Yes, it is.
People who were elected to repeal, defeat, de-fund, or otherwise stop Obamacare sold out thoroughly, and in front of God and everybody.
There is lots of video for campaign ads for challengers, just to remind the voters who supported this crap.
remember
Yet, they still want to be called "Republicans" for some reason
Do we have any idea of the numbers tuning in to CSPAN watching Sen. Cruz? I have only watched CSPAN for a few minutes at a time, but I was watching this the entire time.
McCain won his seat. A Democrat didn't win it. If Arizonans wanted their Senator to defend Obamacare, they would've elected the Democrat. Why does McCain think people who voted for Obama in other states are his constituents, rather than the people who voted for him?
Since does a President winning an election mean that every single congressman has to do everything he says? Especially if they won their elections running on a different platform. Once a Presidential election happens, we’re never supposed to have a debate again, just give the President everything he wants?
