To address a $700 million shortfall in its operating budget from sequestration cuts the FBI "will shut down its headquarters and offices across the country for roughly 10 weekdays over the next year" as reported by Michael S. Schmidt for The New York Times.
Perhaps Congress should consider an incentivised model by which the Bureau could fill its budget gap by recovering funds stolen from the entitlement programs. For example, about $1.3 billion in social security disability payments was lost to potential fraud in a recent two-year period according to a Government Accountability Office report as reported by Fox News. That's just one program for a small period. Fraud in the system is rampant. Indeed, Medicare and Medicaid programs "lose an estimated $65 billion a year to fraud" as reported by The American Spectator.
Let the FBI keep whatever it recovers in funds misappropriated from the federal treasury, and it not only will meet its shortfall but with an annual budget at $8 billion could become a completely self-financing agency in no time.
hey I got an idea! If they took those ten days to find the $1.6 billion in fraud then they could pay for themselves
I’d shut down the “civil” “rights” division that pays ACORN/SEIU types to stoke up “community” “unrest” and fake “outrage”.
Keep the FBI active, but shut down the irs instead.
Oh, gosh! How can the nation survive ten days’ worth of interruption of the F, the B, and the I’s political blackmail efforts? Bank robbers will go berserk. It’ll be the wild west all over again.
