China has ordered its entire press corps back to school in an effort to shore up ideological unity. The nation’s 307,000 reporters, producers and editors will soon have to sit through at least two days of Marxism classes, the Communist Party’s Propaganda Department has announced along with the press association and the state press regulator.
The announcement comes a week after Xi Jinping called for increased unity in a much publicised speech and amid a widening crackdown on online dissent. Last week, a reporter with the Modern Express, Liu Hu, was detained in Chongqing on charges of “causing trouble” when he openly called for a corruption investigation into a deputy director of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.
Xi Jinping’s administration has also started a campaign against “internet rumours”, unverified reports circulating online, and those sharing such information. Influential media commentator Charles Xue was detained for soliciting prostitution over the weekend, according to Beijing police, in what observers have called trumped-up charges related to the clampdown.
“The internet has become the main battlefield in the fight for public opinion,” Xinhua quoted an unidentified official in charge of the Marxism classes as saying. “At present, the situation in the ideological field is complex, journalism and propaganda hold even greater responsibility and the task is becoming increasingly difficult.”
The official also pointed to a changed media environment where journalists were younger and less ideologically reliable in their reporting. “Journalists’ ideological and political qualities vary greatly,” the official said.

American journalists to teach the courses.
Sadly I know a few American and British journalists in Beijing who were calling for Marxist ideology classes. I battled those folks and lost so I was blacklisted from the Chinese media. The Obamao Western Marxists said “I wasn’t a team player.” But when you think about it, they were complimenting me.

I heard there is a copy of Mao’s Red Book in the bedroom in the White Hut.
In Beijing Arts District there are many shops that only sell Obama as Mao memorobilia. You can even buy a Muslim prayer rug with the face of Obama wearing a CCP Red Army uniform stitched into it. My favorite one is the Obamao toilet where you can take a dump on Obama’s face.
Now you see the difference between the Commies and the West. The commies have to order, force people to study Marxism. And they hate it. In the West journos and others do it of their own will. And they love it.
That’s so true. I’m sure most of the Chinese attending the class will be sleeping, watching Chinese dramas on their iPads and sending QQ (Chinese Twitter) to all their friends during class time, while the Western journalists are eagerly listening to the Marxist teachers, taking extensive notes and going back to their bosses to snitch on the Chinese classmates whe were not paying attention to the class. I kid you not, this will likely happen. Most Western journalists are notorious snitches in the Chinese media who frequently visit HR offices to inform managers about Chinese journalists, as well as myself, who fail to support the Obamao Marxist agenda in China.

In the context of the Bo Xilai trial, much has been made about Xi Jinping’s Maoist tendencies in recent weeks. Earlier this month, for instance, the Wall Street Journal ran an article about the potential for political reform under Xi that was entitled, “China's Leader Embraces Mao as He Tightens Grip on Country.” Similarly, the always insightful John Garnaut had a piece in Foreign Policy that rightly argued that Mao’s influence in the modern CCP has not ended with Bo’s downfall.
I never met this guy, but he could have been a former China Daily reporter. Leftist CD Westerners aspire to work for MSM outlets. That’s why when you read the China Daily, they rarely criticize Obama and publish articles about Obama’s Green Energy strategy. They worship Obama almost as much as they worship Hillary.
Ironically, the Diplomat is blacklisted on the Chinese Internet along with the NY Times and Bloomberg. Even Beijing would prefer Leftist Maoists would go away. That’s why these 3 media outlets got blacklisted.
I agree. Bo Xilai wanted a return of the Cultural Revolution and that’s what led to his downfall. It’s ok to be a corrupt official but the moment you start calling for a return of the Mao Era, you become an outcast.
Well, they may use Mao as an official prop or borrow some slogans from Mao era but really bringing the country back to Mao’s days would be unthinkable. Those Westerners are phenomenally stupid. This also gives the impression that the West is not as strong and smart as they thought. It breeds contempt for the West among Chinese elites, and make them think that they can beat the West in short order. It emboldens China needlessly. It is a dangerous thing.
I agree with your assessment. The Chinese don’t respect the Obamao Westerners and only use them as props. They say we welcome foreigners in the Chinese media and they let the Westerners tear each other apart. They promote the Obamao Westerners, so that they can laugh and say, “we’re not the ones promoting Mao it’s those foolish Westerners who are doing that.” Meanwhile, they keep the reformist Westerners such as myself away from it but still in China. One person even informed me that my blacklisting was a gift, not a punishment, since I could say that I can prove I was never an ObaMaoist in China.
