Obamacare Strikes, and Forever 21 Cuts Employees' Hours

The predictions and fears of the Affordable Care Act’s adversaries have begun to materialize, specifically fears that the law will encourage employers to demote their employees to part-time positions in order to evade federal health care requirements. Popular clothing company Forever 21 is the first of what might be many companies to limit its non-management workers’ hours to 29.5 a week, just below the 30-hour minimum that the ACA deems full-time work.

Explaining that the company “recently audited its staffing levels, staffing needs, and payroll in conjunction with reviewing its overall operating budget,” Associate Director of Human Resources Carla Macias informed employees that effective 8/31/13, they will no longer be full-time employees of Forever 21.

It is a move that will likely harm the reputation of the company, will absolutely harm the economic circumstances of its employees, and will function as a tangible example of the Affordable Care Act’s consequences and shortcomings.

The lefty blogs are going apoplectic over this. Another trendy business turns into a greedy corporate villain because it won't sacrifice profits to help Dear Leader's pet project.

Can’t wait till the lefty corporations like Google start cutting their employee’s hours too. Maybe the lefties might start getting the bigger picture that the feds and big liberal corporations just used them as tools and don’t give a damn at all about them; they just needed their votes and feigned outrage for political purposes.

I have buddies at O’Reilly’s auto parts who have to decide this week, either go full time or give up health insurance.

Who would have thought that Forever 21 really meant forever 21 hours per week. :P

Just like those who have been laid off in past NYT newsroom purges? The problem is that the survivors are the one’s still in control of the editorial page.

I was sent this by a lefty friend over the weekend and found a story on AOL about it.

Turns out that Forever 21 says this will affect 1% of their employees. They employ 30,000 people in 500 stores. 1% is 300 people. I’m sure that many quit everyday.

I would guess that rather than all employees going to part time, as this story suggests, the truth is that one or several stores have too much staff for the amount of work so a few people were cut back.

So one of the few that were “cut,” “leaked” this to cause trouble for the company. He succeeded.

No big deal either way.
