Twitter Explains Why White People Riot (She had to reach back to 1919 for an example)

With the George Zimmerman case winding down, another funny hashtag addresses the widespread fear of blacks rioting.

There's lots of buzz and fear out there about black people rioting in the streets if a verdict other than "guilty" is handed down in the George Zimmerman case. As the trial winds down, there's no shortage of fearmongering in the media, from radio and TV to print and online.

But black folks aren't the only ones with the capacity to channel hot emotions through destructive means. No one seems to remember the Red Summer race riots of 1919, an entire season of deadly riots mostly sparked and led by whites. Everyone also forgets how soccer and hockey fans like to burn things up and tear things down when their favorite teams win or lose.

But the question posited is always whether or not black people will riot in cases like this. If George Zimmerman is acquitted, will black people be angry enough to resort to violence? Why aren't we worried about other folks rioting if Zimmerman is found guilty? Surely it couldn't be that, collectively, blacks are still seen as savage creatures who can't help resorting to primitive means of emotional dealing, right? Nah, couldn't be that.

So today Twitter asked: What makes white people riot? The responses, tagged with #WhyWhitePeopleRiot, ranged from silly and fun to soberingly insightful. Take a look at some of the best below.(continued with Tweets at link)

so how have they fared in Canada? I have never noticed an impoverished black population in Canada. And I never see any in Quebec city.

I never really hear much about Canadian blacks. I assume things are much the same there for them as they are here.

That made me curious. According to wiki the black population of Canada is only 2.5% of the population. By my estimation that’s less than one million.

The Upstairs Maid forgot to leave a mint on the pillow?

That would definitely cause me to start a riot! :-)

So that statue is mostly drama, not real history.

The whites that riot are drunk anarchists or drunk college students when their team loses.

That doesn’t mean not many went to Canada. Of the 100,000 who fled north by way of the underground railroad, some 30,000 went to Canada and that’s a sizable chunk.

Maybe you have some input on why there are so few blacks in Canada. Personally I think the number is too low to make the race industry profitable there.

Here in Ontario slavery was not common and was banned in 1793. Most of the black population here arrived via the Underground Railroad and many returned when slavery was abolished in the USA.

The only province in which the practice of slavery was common was Nova Scotia, and there is still a significant black population there.

I think the main reason we had fewer problems with black/white relations is that we didn’t fight a war to preserve the institution of slavery. The debate over abolition in the Legislative Council of Upper Canada lasted two afternoons.

Thank you.

I knew a sizable number of blacks had gone to Canada between the American revolution and the end of the civil war and I couldn’t figure out where you were hiding them all.

Maybe the reason “no one seems to remember” them is that if you were 10 years old in 1919 you would be 104 years old today.

I wasn't alive in 1919 either, but I was aware of the race riot that occurred in Chicago that summer through my reading. (BTW, the then young Richard Daley, who would later become the archetypical big city 'Rat machine boss, played a significant role in the white rioting, which occurred in or near his neighborhood. My guess is that the large majority of the white rioters were or went on to become loyal Democrats.)

You don't have to have been alive when an event occurred to know real history and to take that historical knowledge into account in analyzing current events. Nothing wrong with talking about the racially motivated riots of 1919, except that the authoress of the posted article is off base in bringing them into the discussion of the George Zimmerman case. She brings up the 1919 riots as if to say or imply that if whites rioted against blacks at some point in history, it's just payback when and if blacks riot against whites now. Well, two wrongs don't make a right!

Its funny the way we remember history. I suspect its at least partly because history is seldom simple.

The spark that ignited the fuse in 1967 Detroit would have angered anyone. That doesn’t make the rioting OK but raiding a blind pig was hardly worth the result. A better police response to the blind pig would have been to either ignore it and talk to the owner the next day, or close it down without arresting anyone.

That’s the simple answer but things were far more complicated than that. There was rioting all across the country at that time and “coincidentally” enough, the blind pig just happened to be in an apartment upstairs from the office of a community organizing group similar to ACORN. The owner of the building has since admitted that he called others to come and confront police, incited the growing crowd and even threw the first bottle.

When it comes right down to it, I suspect the blind pig was the bait and police took it.

Furthermore, neither the whites nor the blacks living today had any part in the riots of 1919, and Chicago is not Sanford, FL. Two wrongs don’t make a right even among the parties to the first wrong. They certainly don’t make a right with regards to some nebulous non-ancestral guilt that whites in Sanford, FL, are imposed on by virtue of the fact that some race rioters in Chicago in 1919 happened to have also been white. That’s not “payback,” but racism.

Very interesting post about the 1967 Detroit riot, which was, IIRC, just as much black on black as it was black on white.

Also, thanks for the photo of the Underground Railway monument at the Detroit River, which, when viewed in combination with the subject of the present article - historical riots perpetrated by whites on blacks - brings to mind the 1943 Belle Isle riot. What might you know about the causes of that?

My only black neighbor fled Detroit with his family in 67. He was a child but says they burned his father’s bakery so they packed up and left within 24 hours.

I’ve heard about the Belle Isle riot but don’t know much about it.

The Ossian Sweet case is interesting because it was the beginning of gun control in Michigan. Dr Ossian Sweet was a black doctor who fired on a white mob trying to force him out of “their” neighborhood. Sweet was acquitted and the first calls for gun registration appeared in Lansing within weeks.

No. Blacks were not drafted by the Union in the Civil War. They did form some volunteer units.

There was virtually no draft for blacks, but 198,000 volunteered for and were accepted into the Union army and navy between 1862 and 1865, by the latter year comprised about one tenth of the entire Union armed forces. Many others were pressed into labor and other support jobs for the Union army, or volunteered as spies behind Confederate lines or as laborers when Union armies were nearby.

The only time I saw a bunch of angry white guys (in ties, no less) was at one point during the “hanging chad” count.
