I skate like a two year old, so I marvel at the ability to perform on those thin suckers.
They’re talking about outlawing some of those spinarama moves. The puck is always supposed to be moving forward. How they will enforce it is another question
I like both hockey and soccer as sports, but any sport that has to rely on a shootout to decide a game needs to have its rules tweaked to allow more scoring.
Potentially allowing a major championship to be decided by a shootout out is like the World Series being decided by a home run derby, the NBA by a HORSE game, etc. It’s just not realistic and does not do justice to the game.
I am not dissing the sports - far from it, and I’m not being a snob, saying one sport is better than another. Just the shootout aspect.
>Absolutely beautiful.
Glad you enjoyed it. Nothing else like it in sports.
I completely agree. It’s unfortunate that the times we live in dictate these artificial limits on the length of games.
But both hockey and soccer would still have these one on ones with breakaways and penalty shots.
I always thought hockey for the fans was like ice fishing; a thinly veiled excuse for drinking.
For example, in hockey:
Make the goal 6 inches wider and/or 4 inches higher.
Decrease the size of the goalie’s pads.
Relax or even eliminate the offsides rule.
For OT, take a player away from each side every 5 minutes or 10 minutes.
Do not allow the goalie to go behind the goal line - let the players go after the puck.
In soccer:
Reduce the area where the goalie can touch the ball to the immediate crease area.
Relax or eliminate the offsides rule.
Make the goal slightly larger.
Put in a halfcourt rule like basketball - no more playing keepaway back to the goalie.
For OT, take a player away from each side every 5 minutes or 10 minutes.
I can’t speak to soccer, but hockey did just fine with sudden death overtime. Yes, there was the very rare game that went past midnight - it was no big deal. But that was before the bean counters ruled.
On your suggestions, insert shrug here!
Uh, are you sure you are not confused with baseball?
I don’t know if “bean-counters” rule, but money talks. Us “bean counters” are just here to make everything work. Without us, they don’t, just like everyone else associated with an effort.
The game does need tweeks though and perhaps the upcoming smaller goalie pads will do the trick. I think goalie equipment needs to be even smaller though. That and better refereeing might make scoring go up to 1980’s levels again.
I discuss reffing with my kid all the time. I coach hockey and he refs it. When he comes off the ice he is gassed. Then he goes through evaluation.
Here is the thing with reffing hockey. If you call every offsides correctly and everything that is an infraction is called, you done your job. The problem is when a ref “let’s the players play.” at that point the rule book is thrown out and you can no longer be consistent.
I coached games where the refs were brutal. However as long as it was consistent I was ok with it since neither team got a real advantage. The only time I really get upset is when the ref makes a bad call then he feels he has to make another bad call to even it up.
As far as the game goes, as long as the puck moves forward in a shoot out, the players can do whatever they want. Removing the line at center ice opened up the game. For all I care the goalies can wear mattresses.
...like Terry Sawchuck wore back in the day. I'm for that but keep the current masks, we sure don't want to kill them off. The goalies of today look like refrigerators out there.
In defense of hockey, it used to be that a regular season game ended in a tie - and quite often teams would play defensively to keep from losing that one point.
With the shootout, a team plays to win the game. And the fans get to see a great ending!
Also, the shoot out is only in the regular season.
In the playoffs, they keep playing until someone scores, even if the game goes into the wee hours of the morning.
Unless you actually play the position of goalie, your argument is shut down.
Goalies, of course, don't want to hear about smaller leg pads.
Gee, there’s a ping list for everything! Who knew? ;-)
The NHL needs to go to Olympic size rink.
