No, no!! Don’t do that!! Put the truth out there for everyone to see, that’s how we educate the liv. But while you’re putting the truth out there, you have do to it in a way that is right, i.e., no sarcasm (hard for me), no name calling (that’s the libs m.o.); just tell it like it is backed up with facts. The libs cannot counter facts so they will start calling you names, at that point ignore them. They hate that even more!

Someone once said that you are entitled to your own feelings but not your own facts. This woman kept saying “my church teaches x” and I would immediately follow with “actually, your church teaches y” and I could prove it. She finally admitted that her particular church considered its foundational documenta (and, of course, scripture) to be merely “guidelines” and “examples” more appropriate to the sixteenth century than the 21st. It was fun, but it was also sad. This person was spiritually destitute and rudderless and didn’t even know it.

Thank you for your words of hope. My daughter is now 48 years old, and sometimes the waiting can be difficult. I get weary, but I will not quit.

...I would never sever ties solely over political differences.

But liberals will, much more frequently than conservatives.

There is a tiny part of me that hopes my nephew has to drop a bomb somewhere while in the AF, just due to wondering whether it would affect their attitudes at all.

It drives the liberals even more batty when you are rational and calm and they are spewing spit and venom while calling you names.

It seems you handled it really well. While pointing out the discrepancies and inaccuracies, it sounds like you did it in a dispassionate manner as you were sure of your facts. Rubbing it in someone’s face seems to be counter-productive if you want your argument to make a difference...
Good to leave someone with food for thought than having them just be fed up with you...
Maybe someday this person will have an “a-HA!” moment and find you to tell you...but maybe not...good on you regardless.

So sad Obama has destroyed so many families but I guess that’s what he wanted.

Exactly.

Staying calm sometimes brings them around. I just had the person I was dialoguing with on FB say that, really, both our views are the same LOL. This is the same person who was calling me ignorant not many posts before that.

I did counter (nicely and factually) that our views couldn’t be further apart.

You have my sympathy! I don’t know what it is that makes people adopt the mindset, I flirted with it briefly myself when young. You know the drill, “If you are not a socialist when you are young you have no heart.” I pretty well got past that before turning 20. I recall one good friend and shipmate I used to drink with sometimes on liberty in Italy. He told me once that he was a socialist and when I tried to point out the error in his thinking he ignored what I said, he didn’t get angry but he simply could not conceive of the idea that what he claimed to believe was absurd. For a while I accepted the idea that it was all a matter of opinion but it is not really any more than the Sun rising in the East is a matter of opinion. The advocacy of Socialism is evidence of a mental disorder.

“advocacy of Socialism is evidence of a mental disorder” Love that! Well said.

I think part of the challenge is that whether one is liberal or conservative is idicative of more than just politics. It goes to the core beliefs that one holds. It is more than just a “D” or an “R” thing. The root of it is often on a spiritual level, the level where we all come to grip with our relationship with God almighty.

That is a scarey place for most people.

That’s sort of like mine, but we all know the elephant is still in the room. I don’t like the idea family members come together guarded that way.....but as usual when truth is spoken those who want to believe a lie will walk away or attempt to silence the discussion.

I make a point not to raise issues that would bring conflict...but they eventually do. So when they open the discussion I will speak the truth...it’s not long before they see their lies cannot stand...and it is always them that cease the discussion when they get uncomfortable.

I hear ya. But we have a way of not being in each others’ faces, we have plenty of non-political things to talk about, and they (and I) are very generous with each other so the relationship is quite enjoyable....without bickering over crap we cannot control anyway. As such, it represents a rare level of civilization which I welcome. The husband is tacitly a lot more conservative than the wife...and we play music together...and he has a bone stock 1911A1 which belonged to his Dad that could bring tears to your eyes. If we were to discuss things political, I could see it generating friction betwixt them. And...what’s the gain in that?

Now, if they were angry, shallow libs, then I would value the potential of the friendship much less. I am absolutely not saying this approach or this forebearance or this tacit understanding might be reached with any old lib. Oh hell no. But we have good times and those, my friend, can be rare for some of us. We do not enforce a silence, walk on eggshells, nor feel like we are working on “tolerating” a certain off-limits area of discussion. In short, we do not overthink it.

Oh, hell yeah... Nephew (union-ist) and neice are both off FB and when we are near each other physically, no politics. In-Laws are full of racist Democrats who all voted for anyone but a Pub, it’s the Chicago way. One couldn’t handle me over ZeroCare and deleted me. Tomorrow is big reunion, and having a back and forth now with cousin right now about Gay Marriage/Religious Freedom.

On another incident I got yelled at because another cousin complained about the difference in gas prices between MS and IL when he was driving back from a business trip. I simply pointed out that the cause is the IL Gov’t and everyone got mad that I brought politics into it. Low information voters.

I've had two liberal women unfriend me on facebook because of my conservative postings, even though we never politically interacted.

I have one acquaintance from high school who is a liberal with whom I go back and forth pretty hard on political issues, but then we'll pleasantly discuss sports and fond memories of the hometown. To my experience he's the rare liberal with some tolerance.

Personally, I can't image me unfriending someone solely because of their views as has happened to me.

Not exactly, but I don’t have a Facebook page. As time has passed I have become less close to family members who are liberals. It’s easier.

Been ignoring my uber-liberal sister and her two homo kids for years, no reason to change this. She could never keep her yap shut at family gatherings, going out of her way to insult me, raving about right wing conservatives and such.

How can you be polite to a sibling that announces at a family dinner that I was the only one in the family "stupid" enough to have gone to Vietnam?

Mama Shawna, you said to look at your info page and there would be a photo of you showing how you look “Woodstockish” or unconservative (if that is a word).

First picture I see you strumming your acoustic and think for all of two seconds “this woman is nuts, she abuses a fine guitar by putting somekind of a goofy drink holder on it, WTH”. Optical mind screw.

So what kind of guitar do you have there?
