Restaurants Debate Gun Control
FSR Magazine ^ | The January 2013 Issue | Daniel P. Smith

Diners at the Esquire Club in Madison, Wisconsin, may be packing heat, but owner John Kavanaugh has no intention of restricting handgun-toting customers from entering his 300-seat establishment.

In 2011, Wisconsin became the latest state to adopt right to carry legislation. Carrying rights are now a reality in every state except Illinois, while only six states—Maine, Louisiana, North Dakota, Illinois, and both Carolinas—claim a complete ban on guns in restaurants.

While each state’s legislation possesses its own language and nuance, from licensing requirements to open or concealed carry permits, many states grant restaurant operators the ability to “post” their establishment—that is, posting a sign at the door prohibiting guns.

In response, various local websites around the country have popped up identifying restaurants that post, some lauding the decision—“Eat in Peace” chimes one Tennessee-based site—and others chiding the decision. One Michigan site, in fact, terms posting “discriminatory.”

For many operators across the country, carrying rights spark a range of considerations and challenges, including issues around liability, unsettled customers, and the fallout from a perceived political stance—all factors that steer operator decisions.

Largely propelled by practical considerations, Kavanaugh decided early that he would not post the Esquire Club.

“If someone comes in to rob me, I would like them to realize that they might not be the only one with a gun,” Kavanaugh says.

Meanwhile, some operators are concerned with perception, fearing that posting would spur political conflict or consternation.....

This time last month, gay marriage was en vogue. This month it is gun control. I wonder what next month’s far left media driven agenda will be?

Rolling right into immigration. Just in time for the summer ethnic riots.

Most kitchens in commercial restaurants that I worked in, you could equip a squad with hardware the cooks and the dishwasher had on them or in their vehicles.

Sure, you have to speak some spanish to find that out, unless you find a line cook shagging a waitron in the linen closet and he's set his carry firearm somewhere convenient while his pants were down.

I'm talking real restaurants with pros, not McDonalds or Applebys.

In the restaurant where I worked the food was so bad the cooks had real reason to fear guns in the hands of the customers. After all a sauce that has been on the steam table for days is as dangerous as a .45.

Carrying rights are now a reality in every state except...

Hawaii has no right to carry. On the books, it is a "May"
state, but in implementation, all citizens are denied this
right, with the sole exceptions of those preferred friends of
the chiefs of police in each county (Honolulu, Maui, Kaui, and Hawaii).
They never, never issue permits to regular citizens.

I was the kitchen manager type that carried a crowbar to pry them apart and yell "NOT ON THE CLEAN LINEN!".

I also did boring paperwork and kept people from killing each other in creative ways.

Receiving product was the best part of the job. That and getting a few minutes on the line.

But no, I was a celibate already by the time I started in the commercial kitchens. I didn't participate in any of that hanky panky. I did, of course, carry my own armory with me.

Not posting is the smart decision if you want to appear neutral and not offend your customer base. Posting is much more likely to be viewed as taking a stand, potentially a controversial stand, than not posting.

The fear - and that is exactly what it is - that would-be gun grabbers have is that armed patrons will somehow, for some reason, fly into a homicidal rage and start shooting.

Really people? "My steak is medium, I asked for medium rare, guess I'll shoot my waiter." Is that what these fear mongers really think will happen? Has anyone here ever been a patron of some business and had someone make them so angry that you really wanted to kill them and were prepared to follow through and make good on it?

Maybe homicidal rage is just part of the liberal mindset. It certainly is not anything I experience regularly.

Maybe homicidal rage is just part of the liberal mindset.

Certainly, rage is part of the liberal mindset:

What IS Leftism?

“In good academic style I start with a definition: The first thing to say is that Leftism is emotional. The second is to say that the emotion is negative and the third thing to say is that the negative emotion (anger/hate/rage) is directed at the world about the Leftist, at the status quo if you like.”

It’s known as ‘projection’. Since I don’t trust myself with a gun, I don’t trust anyone else with one.

Actually South Carolinians can carry in restaurants as long as the restaurant doesn’t serve alcohol. So generally , we carry in breakfast and fast food establishments.
