The Hartford Courant reports that the Connecticut legislature is going to disclose its proposed new gun laws. Among the proposals is the banning of high capacity magazines.
The proposed compromise among legislative leaders would ban large-capacity magazines containing more than 10 bullets – such as the 30-round magazines that Adam Lanza used in the Dec. 14 Newtown school massacre – but would allow owners of existing larger-capacity magazines to keep them if they submit to a new registration system, informed sources have told The Courant.The bipartisan deal reached late last week by legislative leaders also would strengthen the state's existing ban on semi-automatic rifles – such as the Bushmaster AR-15 used by Lanza to kill 20 first graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. People could also keep those banned rifles if they submit to a new registration procedure.
People cling the belief that the magazines are inherently evil
"We specifically want an up or down vote on the banning of these large-capacity magazines with no grandfathering clause," said Nicole Hockley, whose son, Dylan, 6, was killed Dec. 14. "Because we learned, the way that no other parents should learn, that the most dangerous, dangerous part of an assault weapon is the magazine."
They want to believe that if Adam Lanza had to reload more frequently fewer would have died:
"The horrible, brutal truth is that 154 bullets were fired in four minutes, killing our children, our daughters, our wives. The shooter carried 10, 30-round large-capacity magazines," Hockley said. "We have learned that in the time it took him to reload in one of the classrooms, 11 children were able to escape. We ask ourselves every day – every minute – if those magazines had held 10 rounds, forcing the shooter to reload at least six more times, would our children be alive today?"
Unfortunately, these beliefs are without basis. And here is the proof

Lanza reportedly expended 154 rounds in five minutes. He reloaded six times. Had he ten round magazines he would have had to carry 15 additional magazines instead of the nine he carried in order to expend the same number of rounds. Allowing four seconds per reload (generous, as you can see) Lanza would have needed an additional 40 seconds at most to do what he did- probably less, since half of the magazines weren't empty.
Banning high capacity magazines won't solve a thing. People are focused narrowly on the reported five minutes Lanza spent shooting. The problem is, he had more than ten minutes.

If just one of those adults had been able to return fire, thing might have ended very differently.
The point is we are looking at this in a rational manner. Those who support these laws, and the jackass in the whitehouse who continues to expound on their benefits, is looking at it from a political point of view driven by the need to destroy any opposition voices to their agendas. I liken trying to explain why none of these laws will be effective to explaining to a Kamakazi pilot he is not going to return.

I sure wonder how they propose to “find” all these normal capacity mags, because everyone I know and have talked to from Conn, isn’t registering anything.

They have a fallen into the “number of rounds expended” trap.
When Harry Tracy broke out of prison he shot down 11 law enforcement officers, averaging one shot each, and wounded others.
He also shot his partner in crime. If I remember correctly, One shot to kill him, then the rest of the box for spite, or 20 rounds.
His weapons? A 30-30 Winchester 1894, and a .45 Colt SAA.

I don’t know where you 15 additional magazines, by my count he would have need 16 total. Your point is still valid, not many seconds difference when you look at response times from the police.
The amount of time that it takes to reload is only important if there is effective opposition. Do the people who are hawking this proposal really think that a 6 year old would have taken out Lanza when he reloaded?
Obviously, Lanza is dead, but I’m convinced he chose this target because he knew there would be no effective opposition. Small kids and women teachers who would be very unlikely to have a weapon even in a car.
It takes less than 2 seconds to drop and swap mags.

If standard-capacity magazines are evil, useful only for massacres, why do all of the police need them?
Or, he could have just used a Biden-approved pump-shotgun loaded with #4 buck, 27 deadly balls per shot.
But then he would have to put one through the ceiling first and afterwards could only fire blindly through a door, per Biden’s directions.
No one in that school could have effectively defended themselves from a determined man with a knife.
