I suppose most Universities have these printers, along with some high-tech firms. Not a long list of owners, but ATF has it and is constantly updating it. You can bet they know where every one is.
The "ink" for these printers is pretty unique, too - could end up on a list of its own.
Are you aware that a program has been up for sometime which allows a 3D printer to make all the parts needed for building a 3D printer? Did you know that this printer tech is already printing in alive cell ‘ink’ and metal printing is also being done?
That turns out to not be the case. There is a very strong group of people that build their own. In at least one case, Rep-Rap, there is an open-source push to build a printer that can print a copy of itself.
And the 'ink' isn't unique at all. The various types are very common now.
The technology has really moved forward quickly over the last 7 years.

I think conservatives understand this. The GOP had better wake up and fully understand this if it would like to choose to survive. It is more important to see that the world has changed than to obsess over the last election.

While they may start tracking these if they can, the original low cost printers are do-it-yourself open source projects. Nobody knows who has them. As for the ink, there are many materials, including very common thermoplastics. These plastics are so common that there are another class of do-it-yourself machines which grind up and recycle used household plastics into printer filaments. You might soon be able to manufacture a gun out of recycled prescription bottle caps or ABS pluming pipes.

You are probably right. On reflection, it was a similar type movie on a naval ship, and I think the character was played by Steven Seagal.

It’s not hard to make something that will stand up to a few shots with low pressure ammo. You can actually use dense hardwood like oak, with a few scrap metal parts.
In East Germany, every typewriter was registered with the state and possession of an unregistered typewriter sent you to the gulag. The Internet isn't a typewriter and Congress would find it hard to control a product necessary to various industries. Think: huge potential Black Market similar to what happened during Prohibition.
I don’t think that the unions would be too happy about them,either.This sort of technology would by pass the manufacturing and transportation unions, allowing anyone to create anything and sell it anywhere, without union intervention.
