Three typical reactions to survival scenarios
SHTF School ^ | 3/16/13 | Selco

Posted on 03/19/2013 2:35:22 PM PDT by Kartographer

1. King of the playground

SHTF, and there are no rules anymore, and you can go out and do whatever you want. You can use force in order to do whatever you want. You can fulfill your dreams. Everyone is gonna be scared but you are powerful and dangerous, you are the king of the playground.

2. SHTF and what the f… am I going to do?

You wake up one morning and SHTF, you are devastated, waiting for electricity to come back to see on TV what is going on, while people outside demolishing local mall and taking home whatever is useful.

You are believing in government, law and order, „common sense“ and you simple do not understand preppers and all „conspiracy theorists“. Off course you do not believe in guns too, you think that everything can be solved in nice and civilized way. We are humans not animals and do not fight for food and survival with violence like animals do…

3. People who are prepared (preppers, survivalists…)

You know that great majority of stuff on TV and internet is fake and there only to form public opinion. You are preparing for bad days but also you are living your life as best as you can, because S. is going to hit the fan for sure. You do not want to belong to herd of consumers, and you want truth all the time, no matter how ugly can be. You are looking for people who think like you, it is hard to find them, but they are there. You are not wishing SHTF, but you are definitely not gonna be scared once when it comes.

For my family if the SHTF all it means is that we’ll be keeping a 24-hour watch. Other than that we’re ready.

Stay put until THIS happens. Plan ahead and make sure you've got good tires on your car and a spare that works!

Why bother? If someone breaks in to steal your Beanie Baby collection, you can just submit an insurance claim. Besides, the police will be there in seconds, won't they? And if we can get strong gun control laws, that means the criminals will be unarmed, so good people will be safe until the police get there. #1 will get you killed by #3. That scenario may sound good while sitting around on the porch drinking a beer but putting it into play is a whole nother thing.

#2 is just SOL

Everyone should do themselves a favor and stock up while food is abundant and reasonably priced.

I do mental practice about this or that happening and develop my response and practice it over and over mentally. That way, I can react and not stand wondering what to do when “x” happens. The more plans of action I have, the less I am concerned about “x” or “x” happening.

There will be situations I couldn't have guessed would happen, but I am a rational thinker evaluating outcomes all the time and I don't have mental “freeze” and wait for someone to save me.

I never did get this woman screaming bit if something happened. I've seen movies all my life where there is a catastrophe, and the woman stands there and screams. I have never screamed in my life; it's taking up time when action could help. I go silent, thinking and acting. I'll talk about it later.

I was a first responder for my gated community in another county from where I live now. I kept a pair of pants and a shirt on my bed with shoes on the floor in the same place. I slept with my socks on. When I got a call, I jerked the clothes on, stuck my feet in the loafers and was gone to the scene of the accident. I made evaluations rapidly and took action to do what had to be done. It was only after that I went through everything that happened to determine if I could have done something more efficiently.

I don't expect my methods to change in the event of an emergency for whatever reason.

I suggest all do mental exercises to prepare for responses if “x” happens, whatever “x” might be.

I 'think' I'm prepared as I'm going to be materially - got food, water, water purification methods, protection devices, fuel, vehicles fueled up and ready to go if roads are clear, 24 hour bags, antibiotics, pet supplies, clothing and blankets, a list of what to take from the house and load in the car trailer if there is time and clear roads to get to the mountains, got all the same stuff up there along with about 10 cords of firewood to heat and cook with and cast iron cookware to use.

BUT once again Marcella has me thinking ;) I'm learning so much here. I can be materially prepared, but psychologically unprepared. And in this game, only the fittest will survive. I need to not only practice using my preps and weapons, but practice HOW and WHEN to use them. Thanks for being a fount of information, Marcella, JRandomFreeper, and Kartographer! And all!

prepped, as much as possible, however...

The best laid plans of mice & men...
As Rawles put it...'hindsight is 20/20'

Just IMO...the best preppers are those who know where they are weakest,
and are always looking towards remedying that...till they start looking at the next weak point.

I always end up working at 'the latest' area I think I need to shore up, after talking with other preppers.
I always end up seeing or hearing about a new way of doing things. Most of which might REALLY get tested till crunch time.

If the SHTF and someone breaks into our house then, in a totally unrelated coincidence, our pigs won’t need to be fed for a day or so.

That always drove me nuts. Seems to happen more in the older movies more. I always want to slap some sense into those dizzy females!

Love your post with “the screaming women” detail!

They’re always the first to trip and fall when someone is chasing them, too.

I’ve decided these are LIBERAL women.
Conservative women are too busy reloading, while fixin’ some chow.

Thanks for the link. I find these posts very interesting because it gives a stark, realistic contrast to those of us who may be prone to thinking of these potential extreme situations in terms of our own fanciful imaginings. I have a tendency to think that because I’ve been in combat, that somehow I am largely prepared for this type of situation; the fact of the matter is that while such experience may help me in the defense aspect of such a situation, there’s still much work to be done in the way of preparing myself and my family for the whole host of other extreme factors that come into play here. This provides a good counterbalance that forces us to think more realistically of what a total social collapse would look like, with or without a full-scale civil war raging around us.

Awsome post GG2.

"#1 will get you killed by #3." My first reaction also, and it will be a death richly deserved.

"That scenario may sound good while sitting around on the porch drinking a beer but putting it into play is a whole nother thing." "Nother" isn't a word, but I love the way you used it by separating "a" and "nother". Is that a Georgia thing? :)

"Everyone should do themselves a favor and stock up while food is abundant and reasonably priced." I may or may not have done that already.

With SO many things to consider, these threads are like information databanks. I appreciate all who participate (except the trolls of course).

I was thinking about food availability, and one thing should be obvious. Not only will store shelves empty quickly just from panic shopping, but the looting that will follow will shut them down completely. This is true especially in and around the cities where theft threatens their existence even now. Add the need for repairs and armed security and those stores will be history, and THAT is when the ‘zombies’ truly come out. The unprepared will be screwed, and not in a good way.
