Senator Coburn Holds the Line Against Universal Gun Registration
Gun Watch ^ | 7 March, 2013 | Dean Weingarten

Citizen disarmament advocate Charles Schumer (D-N.Y) has shown that the cry for universal background checks has always been a subterfuge to move toward universal firearms registration.

Senator Coburn (R-OK) has offered a compromise allowing for background checks as long as no records are kept. Such systems are easily implemented and controlled through sting operations. The advantage of such a system is that can not easily be used to construct a universal registration database. Gun registration has historically been the precursor of gun confiscations, either slowly and individually, over time, or in groups during a crises.

It appears that the potential of registration is more important to those who advocate citizen disarmament than requiring universal background checks, as they remain adamant in requiring record keeping as part of any new law.

When citizen disarmament advocates say that record keeping is “the fundamental building block of any serious gun violence prevention system,” it is clear that registration is what they are working toward.

Maryland State Police does not keep records either when they issue you a “Not Disapproved” approval to your background check when purchasing a regulated firearm. Yet our brilliant guv O’Malley projected a powerpoint at some point showing a map with gunowners addresses there. Also during the sniper scare years ago, police went door to door to owners of .223 rifles asking for their “voluntary” submission of their firearms to state run ballistics test so they would, you know, clear the air.

They do keep records. Against the law. They are democrats.

Coburn has good intentions, but who trusts the gov’t. to not keep records?

Of course, if their record of "not keeping" records was anything like their record of "keeping" records, there may not be a problem.

If the only information that they have is that someone checked the data base to see if an individual was on it, at a certain time, their is not much information to keep.

No serial number, model or caliber, no certainty that a transfer ever took place.

I do not think Coburn wants that sort of system. This is to show that the civil disarmament types are not dealing in good faith. They do not want “universal background checks” they want record keeping for gun registration.

Chuck Schumer gave away the game when he was on one of the Sunday shows with Ted Cruz. He was talking about the gun show loophole and said that a person can legally purchase a bunch of guns at a gun show and then sell them privately. And this was his concern and the reason for his support of universal background checks, and really registration of all firearms. Because they want to know where the guns are. They want to know who owns them, and who they are sold to, like cars.

The problem is, YOU DON’T WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO KNOW WHERE THE GUNS ARE BECAUSE THEY WILL COME AND SIEZE THEM! The reason the British went to Concord was to sieze the store of arms to quash the rebellion in its infancy. They were unsuccessful.

Schumer said yesterday he is breaking off talks with Coburn. They’re getting nowhere and hopefully won’t, because the people are aware of what’s really going on!

Do they really think a person will go to the gov’t and check out his friend if he wishes to sell or buy a gun?

At a BIG gun show, like the one in Tulsa OK, you might walk in with one firearm, then buy, trade, sell, through out the 4000 tables.

Do you really expect every person there to call the feds to check out a visitor, and get yourself checked out 5-10 times in one day as you trade around?

If my neighbor is short of cash and is willing to sell a firearm that I am willing to buy, why should he or I call the feds for permission!

Gun registration has been their goal for the last fifty years.

And it WILL lead to confiscation which is also their secondary goal.

***YOU DON’T WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO KNOW WHERE THE GUNS ARE BECAUSE THEY WILL COME AND SEIZE THEM! ****

This is what happened in Great Britain in the last thirty years.

It used to have a thriving target and shooting culture with registered firearms. Then after two high profile murders the Gov’t seized the handguns, and later the rifles.

Now bRITS can go to prison if you find an old double barrel shotgun in the attic and turn it in. “YOU TOUCHED THE GUN! TO PRISON WITH HIM!”

Without registration background checks on private gun sales is unenforceable. It will be universally ignored.

I do not think so. There could be utility in determining if the person you are selling to is a prohibited possesor or not.

It could easily be enforced with sting operations. If you sell a gun to someone at a gun show, and you do not do a background check on them, they could be an agent or informer.

I am not in favor of background checks. I think they are silly, do no good, and are an infringement. However, I think that Senator Coburn, in saying that he will accept background checks if there is no record keeping, is calling their bluff and showing that what they are really after is universal registration.

I hope so but that is not the way I read his initial statements on the subject.
