I.F. Stone, Soviet Agent—Case Closed

When new information about Americans who had cooperated with the Soviet KGB began to emerge in the 1990s, no individual case generated as much controversy as that of the journalist I.F. Stone, who had long been installed in the pantheon of left-wing heroes as a symbol of rectitude and a teller of truth to power before his death in 1989. . .

THANK JOE MCCARTHY, DON'T DEMONIZE HIM...heard some people in a discussion on Fox the other night talking about how Feinstein, Levin, and McCain had sent a letter to "Hollywood" trying to get them to playdown "Zero Dark Thirty" because it supposedly shows "torture" in a positive light - discussants compared this to McCarthy's "witch hunts" in which he supposedly tried to have people in Hollywood blacklisted - truth is McCarthy never tried to get anyone blacklisted, and certainly never sent any letters out using his official position to have anyone barred or removed from any position in Hollywood - it was the people themselves in the entertainment industry who became weak-kneed and did the blacklisting - and by the way, a witch hunt implies a search for something non-existent - like a witch - the communists McCarthy was lookijng for were, as it turns out, very real and they were all over the place, including Hollywood......

The writer of this piece is just plain wrong. Senator Joseph McCarthy did his country a great disservice. He allowed his personal issues, namely alcoholism, to protect communists in the United States, whether that was his attention, or not. (McCarthy was practically an adjunct of the Kennedy family. He would not aide the campaign of anyone running against a Kennedy. The Kennedys greatly aided his career. JFK never once criticized McCarthy, and would angrily leave any event where he was criticized. RFK’s oldest daughter, Kathleen Kennedy, is Mccarthy’s God daughter.

A great American!

Even as a kid I questioned the conventional line on McCarthy. I'm glad I did!
