Thomas Jefferson was in massive debt his entire life. His heirs had to sell Monticello when he died.

Two of the Framers, James Wilson and Robert Morris ended up in debtor prison.

Wilson was an associate justice of SCOTUS, and Morris was the financial mastermind who made our finances work long enough to win the Revolutionary War.
