As Connecticut lawmakers discuss how already-strict state gun laws might be strengthened in response to the Newtown shootings, some lawyers are expecting a spike in firearms confiscations under an existing law.
Connecticut's gun seizure law allows police to take a licensed firearm from someone who is considered a danger to themselves or others and hold it for up to a year. The law was passed in response to the workplace shooting deaths of four people at the Connecticut State Lottery headquarters in 1998. The gunman, Matthew Beck, had a history of suicide attempts.
"This law has been used over 300 times since 1999 and there is no question that it has prevented tragedies from happening," said Mike Lawlor, undersecretary of the state Office of Policy and Management and a former legislator who worked on the gun seizure law. "I'm sure we can beef up the law even more, and I'm sure we will."
According to the state Office of Legislative Research, police in Connecticut applied for seizure warrants 277 times between 1999 and 2009 and confiscated more than 2,000 firearms. Records indicate the use of the warrants gradually increased over the years, ranging from 16 in 2003 to 42 in 2008.
But no gun confiscation records have been compiled since 2009, a situation that the state Judicial Branch is currently addressing.
Chris Duryea, a research attorney for the Judicial Branch, said his office is building a database to keep track of gun seizure cases, replacing an old paper-based system. It will take several months to complete the database, which will allow law enforcement personnellocal, state and federalto quickly access any prior gun seizure history when dealing with potentially dangerous people...

Adults who cannot be trusted with firearms belong in prison or mental institutions.
CT is a shit hole. I live in Illinois, which is a pit; but it is better than CT (not that that says a lot about Illinois).
You describe Illinois as a pit (and I agree). What keeps you there? The job?

There is no way that you can prove that statement is true. It's like saying because I snap my fingers the tigers don't attack. You say "but there are no tigers around". I respond, "works really good doesn't it". You can't prove a negative premise in formal logic.

Yup. The company I worked for promoted and transferred me up here from Louisiana. I’m 62 this year, so I may be packing it in this year and moving back to Louisiana; in any event, I’ll be out of here in three years. Illinois is an unusual state: Get outside of Chicago and Illinois is a damn fine state (its political junta notwithstanding).
It’s a terrible shame that Chicago determines what happens in the rest of the state. South of I-80 is an entirely different state than north of I-80; and west of Chicago is not that bad at all (except for a couple places). But Chicago totally dominates, and is a cancer in so many ways. Get rid of Chicago and you get rid of the Chicago politicians that domninate state government, and Illinois would be great! Well, except for winter.
It’s an over taxed and expensive shit hole. I’m on my way out as soon as my daughter graduates high school in two years. The moron politicians make it easy for people to leave this state. Pretty soon there will only be stupid politicians and welfare recipients living here. Oh, and government employees too.
As soon as my two sons are out of high school, me and the misses are hitting the road for Texas.
Thanks for the reply.
It’s interesting that the rest of Illinois is unlike Chicago. I would imagine that most of them would love to separate from that cesspool of a city.
Mrs. OldPossum was born and raised in Chicago. We were last there in 2005 for the settlement of her father’s estate, and I never intend to return to that place. She can if she wants to (still has family there).
She, is glad to be away from that weather; she gauges all winters in comparison to Chicago’s.
“Anyone ... who even has a gun is automatically mentally ill”
The new Catch 45?
Bar associations in the states pushing for gun control as they did the divorce/cohabitation regime? Drooling for more dollars raining from cases? Naw! Couldn’t be!

“I Oughta Went Around”
“They grow potatoes there?”
“The only good thing coming out of that state is I-80”
“I was 28 before I realized I was free to leave.”
I grew up in Newton/Marshalltown and heard all the little Iowa digs. But I do so love my home state and the Iowa State Fair. Nothing better on Earth.
I only recently went back through Iowa on I-80 on my way to an event in Lincoln, Nebraska. Stopped in the old hometown - didn't recognize it. (I grew up in Altoona,IA) Gassed up and went on my way. Think I spent about 20 minutes there including pumping gas, getting a coffee refill and using the restroom facilities.
I don't miss it at all.
But now I gotta get the hell out of ILLINOIS!!
