It actually is a military term, going back to the Sturmgewehr Storm Rifle, Storm as in storm/assault a position. But it's defined as a fully automatic rifle firing an intermediate power cartridge. Intermediate between a full power cartridge, like a .308/7.62x51 and a pistol caliber, like 9mm or .45 ACP. If it fired a pistol cartridge, it would be a submachine gun, or machine pistol.

An "Assault Weapon" is any gun the grabbers want to ban.. this month.
