Take away government benefits and the welfare neighborhood would become Detroit.

This is the point that Rolling Stone Magazine made in its Sept 2012 edition. They asked "What would the country look like if Mitt Romney were elected?" Their answer: Detrot. The thinking goes like this (although they didn't spell it out):

Detroit has been ruled by Democrats for decade after decade.
All of the productive people have been chased away.
An enormous class of dependent people has been created.
The whole structure of Detroit was built on pointless government programs that managed to funnel money into neighborhoods to keep them somewhat alive.

And then the money ran out and Detroit crashed and burned.

Much of the country is really like that. It's propped up by pointless government programs that manage to funnel money to various areas. If a politician (i.e. a Republican) were to engage in any serious budget cutting, all the money would disappear and neighborhood after neighborhood all across the country would crash and burn and suddenly look like Detroit.

Rolling Stone Magazine was all in favor of keeping the shell game going a while longer -- keep the Republicans out of office: we cannot afford fiscal responsibility; the impact would be too terrible.

Excellent, but with a tweek: "They are the six and seven figure hall monitors who have become convinced that people need keeping tabs on and that no community can achieve its best self without people like them to compel everyone to follow the their rules.

My work requires me to go to ‘inner-cities’ a couple of days a month. I shuffle my schedule and try to make sure my ‘inner-city’ days are rain soaked, it keeps most of them indoors and off the streets.

Nice sunny days? You’re just looking for trouble.

Also make sure to ‘go and get out’ before noon.

You'll also see an amazing number of Cadillac Escalades in colors various shades of purple, with $4000 worth of wheels and tires, and another $3000 worth of lighting and music equipment.

Its amazing what you can afford to drive when your fellow citizens are paying for everything that you need or want.

The job is hopeless, the regulations are overwhelming and the hierarchy is stifling. Nothing is ever accomplished, but group solidarity requires believing that it is and participating in new programs to learn new procedures created by clueless consultants that promise to change everything, but actually change nothing.

Yep. That's teaching. I went into it because I love English, I love language, I love books, movies, poems, reading, and writing. But it's getting more depressing every day, teaching the children of the folks described in the first few paragraphs, and being constantly blamed by society for their failures. I had a boy tell me last week that he's only staying in school till he's old enough to buy lottery tickets.

Wow - that must have been like a slap in the face. But when I see young family members that seem to be heading for disaster, I take heart from the fact I was like that - not exactly like this kid, but making a lot of bad decisions, and eventually turned it all around.

...and ALWAYS REMEMBER...

...these people's vote count as much as ours do...

...unless there is a way that the "welfare vote" is eliminated, this is what we will be saddled with for decades....or until the crash...

Great read. We need more writing like this to provide clarity into this hell-on-earth existence.

I don’t even envy people on welfare, or the people helping them to remain on it. I know they lead miserable lives. I just hate that our hard earned dollars go to perpetuate it.

In academia, I am SURROUNDED by this. It’s a constant drumbeat talk of “disparities” and the push to put the onus on someone else to eliminate them by making all things equal. NEVER any mention of personal responsibility for one’s own circumstances. It’s as if that concept just doesn’t exist in their minds.
