Why Staten Island Went for McCain
CityRoom Blog NYTimes ^ | November 6, 2008 | JONATHAN P. HICKS

In Tuesday’s election, New York City was firmly Obama country with the Democratic candidate sweeping the city with huge margins of victory. But that was not the case in all parts of the city.

While Barack Obama won 88 percent of the votes in the Bronx, 85 percent of Manhattan, 79 percent of Brooklyn and 74 percent of Queens, Staten Island went for John McCain, giving the Republican senator 52 percent of the borough’s vote, according to unofficial returns tabulated by The Associated Press.

Those results again underscored the distinctive position that Staten Island has had in the fabric of New York City and its political life.

“You see that kind of voting there because Staten Island has a lot of Republicans and the people we used to call Reagan Democrats,” said John H. Mollenkopf, director of the Center for Urban Research at the City University of New York Graduate Center.

“You have a large group of Italian-Americans and German-Amercians, people from blue-collar backgrounds,” Mr. Mollenkopf said. “And they are used to crossing party lines to vote for one way for one office and for another party for another office on the ballot.”

I’m surprised this article from 2008 missed an important point: New York’s 13th Congressional district, which includes all of Staten Island and the predominantly Irish and Italian sections of Brooklyn (including Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst), also sent a Democrat to the House in 2008 — by a 61%-33% margin.

My point in re-posting the article was to make people think about the ‘revenge’ comment. Or the ‘punish our enemies’ comment.

I remember years ago looking at a “red-blue” map of the country by county and being surprised Staten Island is the only borough of NYC that goes republican on a regular basis.

When I saw how they were getting ignored after the disaster, more than other areas, my first thought was, this is payback/vote suppression punishment for that.

After all, if they can’t vote on election day, that cuts out the only NYC red area. My guess is Dem politicos dirty fingers are all over this.

They just realized that, although McArrogant sucked, he sucked less than Barry.

Simple as that.

It’s about revenge with 0bama. And Jarrett, MO, etc.

They hate Whitey almost as much as they hate Republicans, both of which they want dead.

They will have “Observors” in, oddly enough, predominantly red counties of NY to “monitor” the vote.

There was a reason for that.

His name is Vito Fossella.

Understood. You think that seat is going to stay back in the GOP’s hands for very long? Grimm barely won in 2010.
