Bloomberg’s big-soda ban approved by NYC health board

The New York City Board of Health approved Mayor Michael Bloomberg's ban on large sugar-sweetened drinks Thursday, as expected. Eight of the board's nine members voted in favor of the ban; one, Dr. Sixto R. Caro, abstained.

"I am still skeptical," Caro told The Associated Press. "This is not comprehensive enough."

The plan, proposed by the mayor in May, calls for a ban on the sale of all sugar-sweetened beverages—soda, sports drinks, energy drinks, sweetened teas, coffees and fruit drinks—in cups larger than 16 ounces at the city's restaurants, food carts, fast-food joints, movie theaters, stadiums and sports arenas. The Barclays Center, the new arena for the Brooklyn Nets opening next week, will comply with Bloomberg's ban, its developer, Bruce Ratner, said Thursday.

The new policy covers any beverage that contains more than 25 calories per 8 ounces--but does not include diet sodas, soft drinks sold in grocery stores and in most convenient stores or those that contain 70 percent or more fruit juice. Beer is also not included in the ban.

"Six months from today," Bloomberg tweeted, "our city will be an even healthier place. NYC's new sugary drink policy is the single biggest step any gov't has taken to curb #obesity. It will help save lives."

Nearly 60 percent of the city's adults and 40 percent of its children are overweight or obese, the mayor's office said, putting them at higher risk for disease.

But Bloomberg's ban has plenty of critics, who say the mayor is ushering in yet another "nanny state" policy.

Read the whole post. There is a quote from a power-mad chef who apparently thinks that the time of people making their own choices has passed. Satire could not top this stuff!

Nanny State PING!

That government is best which governs least. What a waste of time and resources for the govt to be doing this. I guess the freedom to choose only applies if one wants to terminate one’s child.

Mayor Bloomberg has lived in a ridiculously wealthy bubble for so long, that a part of his brain has gone missing. Or, perhaps he is a genius to anger and distract New Yorkers and, in fact, the rest of us, by diverting the attention to the consumption of Slurpees. Distraction and redirection is an old tool if you want to change the subject.

They can see no reason to put this to a democratic vote and abide to the will of the people? So much for that smart and savy New Yorker image if they fall for this.

Sell two cups fused together, each holding 12 ounces or whatever.

Just go back for additional 12 oz. refills.

So the giant drinks might make us fat and ill and that might lead to an earlier death. So the NY government bans giant drinks.
Abortion however, which is certainly going to lead to an early death for the murdered child, is legal.
I am having trouble understanding this.
Pregnancy IS preventable you knowe. Birth control pills have been around that I know of, since the 60’s. Ms. Fluke wants free condoms, but I think since her boyfriend is getting the “free stuff” he should be expected to provide his own. Or the Ms. Flukes of the U.S. could try to keep their panties on for a change.
It really is a mad, mad world

I have no problem with this law. Heck, it probably doesn't go far enough. Most New York City residents clearly don't have the means or intellectual capacity to look out for themselves, so they need someone else to get them through even the most simple elements of their human existence. This just goes to show you that once people have voluntarily given up any pretense about their right to keep and bear arms, they'll allow a despot to come and take just about anything away from them.

That place is so far from anything I've come to know as remotely "American" that I'm surprised you don't need a passport to travel there.

A 73 year old lady is beaten raped and robbed by a thug with a long arrest record in broad daylight in Central Park , tourists are being beaten and robbed, armed thugs are roaming the streets, kids are not getting educated and on and on. Yet this @$$hole mayor has nothing better to do than fight 16 oz. soda, fat content in food, and cigarettes while praising donuts and marijuana. Unbelievable!

And last month, the American Beverage Association launched a campaign against the plan, saying, "150 years of research finds that people consume what they want."

Prior to that they didn't need research to tell you that water is wet.

Until freedom is restored...
