Obviously the cashier and Dick's have no idea how to deliver customer service. I am not a bombastic blowhard. But rather, I am a firm and truthful customer that is providing feedback so a business can do a better job in serving me. Bass Pro will continue to get my business, but they won't get my phone number. They are ok with that. If they were smart they would ask for a zip code for their marketing purposes. (I assume they are interested in know how far I traveled to shop at Bass Pro.) Dick's lost a customer today. They know the reason.

Back in the day when restaurants asked you to write your phone number on the credit card slip, I always put 123-456-7890.

No cashier ever looked at it.

I beg the cashiers at the convenience stores to “card me” every time I buy Marlboros. Most just smile and do it; at 62, it makes my day. Yes, I still buy green banannas, too. LOL.

I once went to Dick’s to buy binoculars that were advertised in a circular in that morning’s paper. I asked for two pair and was told by the surly clerk that he didn’t have any. They had been open about ten minutes that day so I asked if they had sold out. I was told, loudly, that the units never arrived. I observed that someone hadn’t done his job. The clerk told me he didn’t need a smart ass customer.

I looked at him and said, loud enough to be overheard, “Now I know why they call this place, ‘Dick’s’”

The laughter around me was clearly audible

I’m a privacy freak myself. To the phone number question, “unlisted.”

Depending on how much I wanted the item or service versus how much they insisted, I’ve stood firm til they gave in, walked away w/out handing over my money, or gave Dominos Pizza (sorry fellas) or some other number where nobody else would be sleeping during business hours. What, they’re gonna call to check for lying?

But age to buy a sling - no, I wouldn’t go back either. Too many other outdoor sports retailers both locally and online. You’d think a brick-and-mortar would be falling all over itself to enhance interactions with costomers.

Radio Shack asked for my name and address on a cash purchase. This was back in the ‘90s. I said it was William Clinton, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. There cashier didn’t react at all, just wrote it it down.

Here in Pennsy the gov’t has “mystery shoppers” trying to buy tobacco & spirits. I don’t know about firearms & the like.

Anyway, if the cashier fails to ask, they get a yellow card. Second offense gets them a red card and fired.

So cut the cashier a break, willya?

Direct your anger at the unelected bureaucrats who have run Harrisburg into the poorhouse.

Academy sporting goods stores ask for a zip code on every purchase. I always tell them 90210, as in Beverly Hills 90210.

I then provided a false birthdate, "4-1-1912" and said "Dick's just lost a customer." My purchase was approved,

FWIW, the request for DOB is to establish a purchasing demographic for the items that are purchased, not as a matter of law. If it was a matter of law then you broke it and should have been arrested.

You could have saved yourself the hassle and the obvious uneasiness the cashier probably felt by simply giving the false date of birth when she first asked.

I've been on this planet now for 62 years and I'm amazed at what people will allow themselves to get pissed off at.

You're no hero in my book, you're just that jerk that caused me to have to wait for you to make your selfish point in the check-out line ahead of me.......

Considering you're in PA, if I didn't know better I'd say you worked for our Budd Company Philadelpha Plant.......

A very close personal friend of mine was asked for his phone number at Best Buy. “202-456-1414,” he casually replied (the former main number at the WH. the current pResident has arranged for it to be changed to 202-456-1111). “That number’s already in our system,” came the swift reply from the clerk. The quick thinking customer then said “...oh, just use 1415 - they both ring at the house.” I almost chewed through my lip to avoid laughing - and busted a gut once outside.

Around here you have to show your ID to buy spray paint at every store; I was told it is because kids are using it to get high.

When at Dicks I always pay cash. 9mm on sale a few weeks ago $10.99 a pop. I used my Dicks card. Shame on me.

Never again!

I agree it's silly.

Here's my story but it's about eBay.

A few months back I listed 200 cast lead bullets for the cowboy action shooters with a 44-40.

eBay pulled my ad instantly and told me that ammunition or their components are PROHIBITED ITEMS!

I relisted them as “High Speed Fishing Sinkers” and they were listed until someone flagged my ad again.

If I sell the lead in bars and sell molds to cast the bullets, that's OK with eBay but not the cast slugs.

That's about as senseless as banning long guns because they are black and ugly.

I’ve been to Dick’s once. Made a purchase but haven’t, and won’t be back. Not because of your type of experience. Only because they took over our locally owned store called Gallian’s. Which I used to love shopping at during lunch breaks.

After Dick took over, I found their selection of products went down, and the quality of service. The whole feel of the store felt wrong from what I was used to. Or maybe some PA based company coming in and buying up my local store didnt sit too well.

No matter. I really don’t like Dick’s.

Gallian’s got several $$$$ of my dollars. Dick’s, not so much.

We do have a Gander Mountain now, not far from my - used to be favorite Gallian’s location - and what I wouldnt give for a Cabella’s here.

But hey, not is not all lost. We have Internet shopping with iPads from our easy chairs. Or anywhere else for that matter.

I’d like to see everyone Give Bogus information whenever asked.....screw up all their Data bases....

More than That...IMHO....We need a National Day of Gun Exchanging....
Buy Your Gun and then exchange it with someone else....

then the next Year have a National Gun Give away...Just walk up to a stranger and Hand Him or her Your Gun....

that will really screw up their Power....Theyll have a stroke!

I would have just tossed the sling to the cashier, said “have a nice day”, and walked out.

They’re not going to stop this nonsense until it starts costing them money.

I went to a Dollar Store the other day to let my daughter get something she needed. At the checkout I saw one of those lighters with the long nozzle, for lighting the fireplace or wood stove, and I grabbed it on impulse.

The cashier said I had to show an ID. I said in a loud voice, “an ID ofr a lighter? You gotta be kidding me.” THis started an impromptu disscusion in the line of customers and the manager came over and said it was a company policy.

I told I would buy one at Menards instead, they don’t card.
