This week Obama, speaking off the teleprompter, said something that set off a storm of criticism:
"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business. you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet."
Pat Sajak, of all people, best characterized the effect of this defining moment on public opinion:
"It's as if President Obama climbed into a tank, put on his helmet, talked about how his foray into Cambodia was seared in his memory, looked at his watch, misspelled "potato" and pardoned Richard Nixon all in the same day."
On Facebook Don Surber summed up voters' impressions quite neatly:
"Americans gave Obama $787 billion for a stimulus. He spent it on government programs. The unemployment rate went up. Slowly it has come down, but it is still higher than when he started spending the stimulus. "If you've got a business, you didn't build that" confirms for many people -- a majority of voters, I believe -- that this our president is a big government blowhard who does not understand business and is to blame for the lack of a recovery from this recession. Context is not simply reading the whole speech but placing the speaker in context."
Recognizing the effect of the blunder the media rushed to Obama's defense: He was taken out of context; misquoted; he didn't mean what he said...

I like the Pat Sajak one.
Hey Obama
The government didn’t build those roads or bridges EITHER
They were built by private enterprise with TAXPAYER’S $$$$$
The government didn’t do anything but collect the taxes
He meant exactly what he said. He believes what he said. He will control and regulate based on what he said. He will destroy America based on what he said. Need I go on?
Obama himself is the ultimate “post turtle”.
The turtle didn’t get on top of the post by himself.
Nobody will admit they knew how he got there.
Once there, he cannot do anything useful or beneficial.
The only way off is for somebody to LIFT him off.
I would make a comment, but Obama would take credit for it.
- TOTUS
Thanks to Øbama, every time I call him a POS, I have to apologize to excrement.
Sometimes when you talk you reveal things about yourself. Mr Obama is here speaking about himself, ie. he got where he is because, for what ever reason, some one gave it to him. His grades were poor but a family freind got him into Occidental, another pulled strings and got him into Harvard. He genuinely beleives thats how all sucessful people did it. In 2009 L.A.Times had a story of Obama’s law career. The one case they cited was someone didn’t pay the baby sitter $800 owed. Obama wrote a letter.... thats it.
The Pat Sajak quote is hilarious
"It's as if President Obama climbed into a tank, put on his helmet, talked about how his foray into Cambodia was seared in his memory, looked at his watch, misspelled "potato" and pardoned Richard Nixon all in the same day."
The only one I didn't ID was the watch reference...
I think Bush 1 looked at his watch in a debate with Clinton.
Nothing could be further than the truth -- other than everything else Obama says.
Although funded by the DOD, the ARPANET was created by private companies asked to develop a survivable communications network for the DOD. Initially universities and later commercial companies big and small found other uses for the technology and further developed it, under private funding, into the Internet. Without entrepreneurial spirits, the ARPANET would still just be a DOD communication network.
The Obama statement is just another side of “It takes a Village” — the denigration of individualism in favor of ‘the Collective’.
Too bad he didn’t add those extra 7 states that Obama built
bump
Well, we’ll see on November 6th if Obama is indeed following in Jimmah’s footsteps.
