This Map Shows Which States Are The 'Greeces' Of America

Earlier today, Angela Merkel issued a dramatic ultimatum about sharing debt loads with other Eurozone countries. We've often discussed how this would actually be something of a silver bullet to solving Europe's PIGS problem.

Now, we have a map that helps illustrate the point — thanks to our friends at the Economist, by way of Taegan Goddard and Matt Yglesias.

Below you'll see the geography of net federal transfer payments in the U.S. by state.

The more pink the state, the more it takes out of the federal pot than it puts in...(or, if you prefer, the more freeloading off Uncle Sam is occurring).

This is basically analogous to what's happening in Europe... except that Greece and other peripheral states don't have a mechanism for getting transfers, so they're on the verge of going bust.

And here's the same map showing the same stats according to household income:

So is purple leaning pink, or is it a color all its own? They need a better legend.

Hmm, so one of the great river routes on Earth, the Mississippi delta, which costs a huge fortune to keep open for the use of lebenteengazillion folks up stream is some sort of freeloading situation.

You stop making the investment to keep that part of that river navigable.... what kind of point would you be making?

Libs are always accusing red states of being on the gravy train because of maps like this. here’s the thing though, if those southern red states could get rid of the freeloading democrats infesting their cities, they would be in much better financial shape. Unfortunately, they can’t do that so Uncle Sam has to pay to keep these useless parasites alive.

If the state has a dominant poor or native american population they are on the receiving end. They are yellow and pink.

So politically blue states, many are wealthy; look good on this map.

This flies in the face of the theory that poor vote democrat and rich are republicans.

low income people don’t pay income taxes, and they get their payroll taxes back as EITC etc.

so low income states don’t pay much in taxes...

Calif, NJ for all their problems still have lots of high income people paying income taxes, but not for long if they keep on the way they are going.

In many ways, liberalism is a form of luxury consumption...

Okay so I’m laughing at myself, because of my own ignorance, which color is bad, and which color is good?

I’m having a hard time distinguishing the “missing” color from two other colors.

Not to defend Alaska, but we do have quite a military presense here. BUT, we definitely need to wean ourselves off the pork!

...Angela Merkel issued a dramatic ultimatum...

To the point in this symbolic cartoon to get Greece's attention.

Maybe some of the states need the same.

I also feel quite stupid. The heading for the top picture: "Balance of Receipts ..." I don't know if these states give more than they get, or what. The bottom picture: "Household income ..." I don't know if these people are under taxed or over taxed.

I understand nothing here. I am a fool.

Greece has one thing going for it that no US State will ever have. Greece can secede form the EU at anytime and NATO will never invade it to keep it in the union. There will never be a siege of Athens or a March to the Mediterranean.

America is itself the “Greece of America” - the only difference is that we print our own money - lots of it.

Another thing seriously impacting these is military bases and research facilities.

I'd bet you NM would be a completely different color if they didn't include White Sands Missile Range, Los Alamos*, and Sandia*.

Some units of measure would be nice, while there at it.
