I was 11 years old when our family first got cable TV in the summer of 1982, and I remember watching MTV as it celebrated its one year anniversary a few weeks later. I consider the music of the early 1980s to be some of the best music ever made...

you must not have been paying attention to the 70's.

But yeah, perhaps. The late '80 and 90's was some of the worst.

I agree with you. 80’s music was terrible, and the only great thing about it was the newness and innovation of the music video. Of course, many vintage 80’s music videos didn’t age well. The author of the excerpt was 11 in 1982, so he never knew 70’s music.

1920s was the best decade for American music last century. Followed by the 1960s.

I’m pretty sure that the only reason MTV aired some videos was due to the lack of choice. The only talent possessed by some “performers” was ownership of video recording equipment.

Ooh this is going to be a fun thread. I’m a child of the 80’s and I’ve been on a bit of a nostalgia kick lately, listening to some good bands from that era. I’m going to watch these videos, then I bet I’ll have a few good ones to post too.

Followed by the 1960s.

Gotta disagree. Other than a few acts such as Hendrix, Black Sabbath and The Yardbirds, the sixties were awful.

I don’t know about the music being great but I was 18 or 19 years old and smoked a lot of pot so I enjoyed the videos.

80’s video’s that I seem to recall:

Madonna, Like a Virgin
George Michael, I want your sex
Michael Jackson, Billie Jean
Robert Palmer, Simply Irresistible
Whitney Houston, I wanna Dance with Somebody
Duran Duran, Hungry like the wolf.
and some video where a trashy woman was slithering and gyrating all over a car, I think it was whitesnake.

Good post!

Back then (early ‘80s), freshly married, we had MTV on the tube nearly all the time in our house. We listened as we worked around the house as much as we watched. MTV was on whenever nothing else was on - - it was the default channel on the TV. It was great, just one music video after another - - Thompson Twins, The Police, Simply Red, Suzanne Vega, the Fixx, Tears for Fears, Eurythmics, the Motels, on and on...

I really miss MTV.

Anyway, here are my contributions to the favorites compilation.
Enjoy!

Me too. That was my era. I like just about all kinds of music except for rap and some jazz.

I know there were others, but the first video I clearly remember seeing on MTV was Michael Jackson's Thriller. I was babysitting and it scared the bejeebus outta me!! The second video I vividly remember, several years later, was Guns-n-Roses Welcome to the Jungle. Musta been the shock value and all! Seems so naive now to say all that... I'm 44...

We got cable when MTV was in its infancy. I watched it so much my dad threatened to get rid of cable. The very first video I saw on MTV was a Rod Stewart video.

I remember when MTV was accused of being RACIST because they would not air black videos. Years later all they had was black rap.

Now they don’t have videos, just crap shows.
