(snip) Another issue that had come to the fore began to hurt us as well. I was troubled when the Arizona legislature passed an immigration bill that allowed law-enforcement officers to demand proof of legal residence from anyone they had lawfully detained and suspected of being in the country illegally. I thought the law would lead to racial profiling. As I started to hear more about Arizonas illegal-immigration problem, I recognized that Arizonas situation was different and more severe than Floridas. Florida doesnt share a porous border with a neighboring country. Its surrounded by ocean. We certainly have an illegal-immigration problem, but it is mostly caused by people overstaying their visas.
(snip) when I hear some people accuse immigrants of destroying the American economy and culture and stealing jobs from American citizens, it stirs my anger, too. I cant stand to hear immigrants described in terms more appropriate to a plague of locusts than human beings. And although I believe they are a small minority, I begin to wonder if some of the people who speak so disparagingly about immigrants would be just as worked up if most of them were coming from Canada.
I understand it is a difficult issue. Its a law-and-order issue. But its also an issue about human dignity and common decency. And when we lose sight of either aspect of the issue, we harm ourselves as well as the people who wish to live here. Many people who come here illegally are doing exactly what we would do if we lived in a country where we couldnt feed our families.

What a fence rider. There must be a hole in his pants crotch from those fence posts.
It would be cheaper to send charity to Mexico than to support these illegales on America’s welfare system.
“...when I hear some people accuse immigrants of destroying the American economy...”
Not immigrants; illegal aliens.
Rubio is a pro-illegal, anti-rule of law, anti-American sovreignty RINO. I’d have more respect for him if he made it official and switched to the Democrat party.
Screw you rubio. I know that you think you're scolding the right but the right only refers to illegal Immigrants. We have no bias against families who come here legally.
The more he says, the more I dislike him. He is not one of us.
Someone who comes legally (like my father, after being on a waiting list for 4 years) is an immigrant.
Someone who comes ilegally is an invader.
Rubio doesn’t see a difference. Which is why he must go.
Hispanics are some of the most racist people in the world. La Raza anyone?
When we have a Republican that has the guts to stand up and shout that he is concerned about American citizens first and foremost and if the illegals are hurting American citizens then they need to be deported. We welcome anyone that is willing to apply for citizenship and come here legally. Someone needs to stand up for Americans-not citizens of other countries. This is how most Americans feel. Why they insist on pandering to citizens of other countries over Americans is just beyond me.
Sounds to me like Sen. Marco Rubio is calling the T.E.A. Party Conservatives racist!!
Illegals are illegal no matter where they come!
High hopes we had for this one, yes we did.
Just another T.E.A. Party user.
Rubio is not tea party. He is opportunist, like virtually all in the corrupt parasitic criminal political class.
He is a destroyer. Only now the mask is off.
We should just adopt Mexico’s immigration laws and be done with it.
...President one day!
BUllPOO!
>>> High hopes we had for this one
At the time, it seemed the right choice. Just like Tea party also ‘used’ Scott Brown.
Only a temporary fix, in the meantime, we need to continue to search for potentials to their right.
I would, personally.
"We're invading your country to take it over, eh?"
Sounds like an argument for greater legal immigration, not necessarily one for letting illegal aliens stay.
I’m looking for some numbers on Canadian illegals and even this pro open border article from 08 says 80,000. In fact I think 80,000 is a wildly inflated number with the actual number being under 20,000. I live in a state that borders Canada and I have only known of a small handful who were here illegally.

It simply doesn’t make sense for Canadians to work here illegally. Hell, it doesn’t make sense to live here and collect welfare when they can get more in Canada.
“The more he says, the more I dislike him. He is not one of us.”
Rubio, like most hispanics, is hispanic first and American after that.
I heard Rush say that, too, and I thought GADS!
RINO Rubio is not even a natural born citizen--not that anyone gives a rip, of course--besides those of us who care about the Constitution!
