Santorum: "I Was Basically Pro-Choice All My Life, Until I Ran for Congress" (1995)
Philadelphia Magazine ^ | December 1995 | Eric Konigsberg

Posted on 03/17/2012 11:01:02 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

IN THE SUMMER OF 1989, Rick Santorum and a fellow associate at the Pittsburgh law firm of Kirkpatrick and Lockhart left work to drive to Three Rivers Stadium for the firm's annual softball game. Sitting behind the wheel, Santorum popped in a tape, and on came the reedy voice of a man lecturing as if to a classroom.

“Listen,” Santorum said. “Newt Gingrich.”

“Who the hell is Newt Gingrich?” the co-worker asked.

Santorum explained that Gingrich was a congressman from Georgia, and that he was the guy to listen to if you were considering a future in politics. “At the time,” says the co-worker, “I had no idea that was something Rick was interested in.” As it turned out, Santorum was already telling people he was running for Congress in the upcoming election. The tape was something he had ordered from GOPAC, Gingrich's political action committee, full of do-it-yourself campaign tips for aspiring candidates.

In recent years, of course, Gingrich's tutelage of Santorum has taken on a much more direct nature. Last September, Santorum, at 37 a Republican U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, managed the Senate floor debate as it passed its welfare bill, all the while working closely with Gingrich, now speaker of the House of Representatives and the country's most powerful Republican. Santorum, who prior to his election to the Senate last year served two terms in the House with Gingrich, is in fact known on Capitol Hill as Gingrich's protégé and his point man in the Senate. The two meet weekly for early-morning swims at the House gym.

Much of Santorum's record, thus far, has been a series of tantrums. More than a dozen times in his first few months in the Senate, Santorum took to the floor to trash Bill Clinton for not drafting a balanced-budget proposal...

[Sounds to me like she learned her life lessons.]

Maybe. But if she’s going to be home schooling in the White Hut, the American people deserve to hear about that alleged process of redemption from the parties involved; instead of hearing about it because some anti-American Eurotrash went dumpster diving.

Once again you Santorum supporters can close your eyes just like the Obama supporters

He is a dream candidate compared to the ONLY alternative -- Mitt Romney. I personally didn't care if Perry, Cain, Gingrich or Santorum is the nominee. But, the first three aren't going to be the nominee. It's either Santorum or Romney or the establishment pick of Mitch Daniels or the equivalent that will be the nominee.

Getting picky at this point when the alternative is Romney or Obama is lunacy.

Winning as conservative for the Senate TWICE in a blue state.

And don't forget who he beat - Harris Wofford, the inspiration for much of Clinton's 1992 campaign strategy, and who beat GOP-E icon Dick Thornburgh. No wonder the PA RINO herd hated him.

This is EXACTLY how Romney operates. This stinks of Romney

That has been Romney's greatest strengths smearing his opponents and fueling divisions among conservatives. The gullible ones are the ones that don't realize Romney is the enemy that needs to be defeated and dream the impossible dream of their perfect candidate being the nominee.

[posters on the New Yorker Forums who say they’re close to the Bremmers and that Konigsberg misrepresented them]

Misrepresented them did he? Sounds actionable.

What are the case numbers from when they filed their law suit(s)?

And just what do you know of the current FLOTUS (the one who surrendered her law license for unspecified reasons)...yet you want to “vet” Karen Santorum? Because of relationship from almost 30 years ago?

And by YOUR criteria, how would the current Mrs. G. “vet?”

The strawman (or in this case straw woman) attacks help no one...this is EXACTLY what props up a failing Obamney.

It is pretty sorry. Even after CharlesWayneCT shrewedly figured out Philly Mag's gambit here, and after it was pointed out just how much of a left wing trash source Philly City Paper is, posters still keep pounding on the left wing talking points. Without apparently realizing that is just what the Romney campaign, and as an extension the Obama campaign, wants.

Karen Santorum is a model of conservative motherhood now. But apparently there is no redemption for her as long as she can be used to bash her husband for something that went down decades ago. Shameless.

Old Story - > Rick Santorum: “I Was Basically Pro-Choice All My Life, Until I Ran for Congress”

Again, a man that would defend what most consider a radical position on contraception and take a stance against porn is man that, obviously, SINCERE.

You can't have it both ways. He can't be too extremely conservative on social issues but a phony on social issues.

Are you seriously directing that to me?

It reeks of Willard’s desperation and those who buy into here...who so desperately want Newt aren’t helping ANYONE but Romney at this point.

Santorum was not my first choice either...but he is the ONLY man standing between us and Obama vs Obamney...revoke healthcare? Why... WE BOTH LOVE IT...and there goes the Republic. I actually admire Santorum’s tenacity at this point...it’s all that is saving us right now.

>>And just what do you know of the current FLOTUS

A lot less than the American people, or at least those who've DIED to make them free, deserve.

>>Because of relationship from almost 30 years ago?

Maybe in your social circle, young girls shacking up with the abortionist Md. who delivered them is the Eyes Wide Shut norm.

But out here in the Heartland, we simpletons just haven't made such “progress” yet.

>>The strawman (or in this case straw woman) attacks help no one.

Maybe the fact that MORAL CHARACTER is just considered today to be an irrelevant “straw woman” — maybe that fact is symptomatic of the systemic amoral corruption that has facilitated the manufacture of the AAA Derivative a$$paper that's poisoning the global economic pond;   with said  a$$paper being the work-product of “fiscal” conservative RINOs and RATs alike.

The evidence of Ken Mehlman & Co. operating in the closet behind W's socially conservative facade clearly demonstrates otherwise.

This article is from 1995.

True. I missed that when I posted, but interestingly enough, my comment was valid anyway. Santorum has made several gaffe-tastic comments in recent weeks.

So tell us, is your tagline inferring that GOP claims about the impact of ACORN on elections and governance are false flag propaganda, akin to Napeloeon blaming Snowball for the windmill's collapse in Animal Farm?

There are no perfect humans. We are all flawed; we have all made mistakes. Your microscopic view of “perfection” doesn’t exist. Or maybe it does...what do we know of Ann Romney? Maybe she IS perfect...but amazingly, she (nor Karen or Callista) is running for anything. But don’t let that stop a nice witchhunt.

Those aren't GOP's claims. They're mine. Complete with graphical aids for the reading impaired.

But since you've shown an interest in the subject:

Who was the Godfather of Subprime, how much did he pay for his temporary ambassadorship the Netherlands, and who was his counterpart on the Obama wing of the sub-prime money tree?

And you therefore make utterly no sense, given the context of the windmill from Animal Farm that you are using.

I'm not looking for "perfection".  Just honesty.

Do these two commandments still exist in Pennsylvania?
Ex 20:14
14 "You shall not commit adultery.
NIV

Ex 20:17
17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
NIV

Tell you what: When you've been here a full year and have some credibility, come back and talk to me. For all I know, you're in a cubicle in Chicago, trying to stir $#*t amongst those “toothless rethuglican wingnuts” that Bill Maher and Janeane Garofalo are always going on about...
