Without open primaries we might actually have elections instead of selections.
The entire process is not only flawed but rigged!
These elections are handled under the various state laws, so it's not as though the RNC can declare that all primaries shall henceforth be closed to all but registered party members.
The better question is: Why do we still have open party primaries in states that now have Republican legislative majorities?
This is the sort of stuff that Michael Steele should've been working on, instead of traveling around the country doing book signings.

Because the state legislature sets the rules as to whether or not a state has voter registration by party. It’s called “states’ rights.”
