Why a Shift by Conservatives to Rick Santorum Would Be a Mistake
PolitiJim's Rants for Reasonable People ^ | February 6, 2012 | PolitiJim

Posted on 02/13/2012 12:25:40 PM PST by Bobbisox

A couple of polls came out from Public Policy Polling this weekend showing that Santorum seems to be replacing Newt Gingrich as the main "not Romney" candidate in Minnesota and Colorado. There seems to be a desire to "give another conservative a chance" as well as to potentially field a candidate without as much baggage as Newt so that Mitt Romney's negative ad carpet bombing will not be as effective.

I think though that this reasoning is fallacious and switching support from Newt to Santorum at this point would be a major mistake. Let's just look at what I believe are the two main arguments for the switch:

This switch to Santorum will be disastrous for our Party. Newt is the only solid conservative Constitutional that has the powerful credentials to upset King Obama. King Obama is pushing more voters his way and by the time we get to the election he will have at least one third of the voters. The rest may be made up of voters that are the least informed and just pull the lever.

Alot of rationalization. The only salient point is that Santorum's record in congress is less conservati ve than Newt's.

I refuse to tie my wagon to one over the other - either is an immense improvement over Romney, thats all I care about.

Everyone’s so sure of everything. All three have weaknesses, and all three can beat Obama.

Unfortunately my crystal ball is broken so I can’t put a guarantee on that.

Doesn’t mean anything to these guys.

The establishment spooked them, and sent them running. Now they think they are in a position of strength because they ran to the guy that has not received any attacks.

Not by virtue of being impervious, just that he hasn’t.

Now that they have clearly communicated that they can be rolled and how, the EGOP only needs to aim, and fire with their money gun.

Exactly what makes Santorum a conservative, other than his stance on abortion and gay marriage? Certainly not his voting record.

And what has he done to advance the conservative cause. What are his accomplishments? Gingrich has done more to advance conservatism than Santorum could ever dream of. Newis so clearly the best choice for so many reasons.

So... “reasonable people” aren’t allowed to conclude that Newt has too much baggage and is unreliable on things like individual mandates, global warming, amnesty and has a tendency to fly off the handle like a more balanced version of Ross Perot??

uh, no thanks

Romney is a liberal. Romney will not under any circumstances beat Obama.

I really have to question the intelligence of attacking Santorum who is actually stomping Romney on his home turf.

I agree with you.

As for me, I will vote for Newt Gingrich.... or I will not vote at all.

I recognize that I may be in the minority on this, but I will hold fast.

Just go back and find a thread from when Gingrich announced for president and see how many posters trashed him then for the things they defend him for now.

We should not go down this road. Eventually, it will be proven he is a weak candidate. I don’t understand this anyway why this is happening with no vetting. I am very conservative, there’s no spark for Rick from me. I realize Newt has been there before and got into huge scraps with the liberal republicans and the liberal democrats. The Rinos were the problem, not Newt. I know of his marriages people judge him for though, to me, I can’t judge someone on personal behavior that have ask God for forgiveness. It is just not in my DNA to begrudge others so I can move on. Rick, to his credit is a nice man but there are huge differences in the way he has always worked in and of the government system. I don’t get the comment by Rush that Rick a conservative because with it running in his body (what a dumb remark by Rush) His voting record has concerns-I don’t buy this well he only voted against right to work because he was backing his principles-he is a union protector and that’s scary. If they are indebt to him or he to them. Majority of his state is non- union so why flip those workers off and continue to align with union bosses. I didn’t listen to Rush only (only heard last few minutes in our office) Did he bring up Newt’s inspiring CPAC speech. Why is Rush giving a conservative like me, the finger?? I help make his audience in the 80’s. I have friends already who are saying to me, if Rick is the non Romney vote, they will either write in or not vote. What a mess this is. Rick is going to lose to Romney. I don’t care what these polls are saying. The media is driving the lemmings logic-be careful. I want to win but I can tell you my Tea Party and non Tea Party groups are not energized by Rick-if they were, I would be very motivated.

There is this argument made by the Romney camp: Romney is the only one that can beat Obama.

Frankly, I think he’s the only one that may not be able to beat Obama. All I care about is “who can beat romney”. That’s the one I want. he reason, for me, is simple: If romney gets the nom., I’m not participating in the presidential election. It would be like a jew deciding between Stalin and Hitler.
